Did you know cardiovascular disease affects hundreds of millions of people worldwide? Yet approximately 80% of CVD, including heart attack and stroke, is preventable. Knowing the risk factors associated with CVD is an important first step in helping to prevent it.
🧬 Lipoprotein(a), or Lp(a), is a genetically determined cardiovascular risk factor that remains widely under recognized. Elevated Lp(a) can significantly increase the risk of heart attack and stroke, independent of other risk factors.
🔍 Awareness remains low among both the public and healthcare professionals, despite the fact that around 1 in 5 people worldwide have elevated Lp(a) levels, often without knowing it.
🩺 Lp(a) can be measured with a simple blood test, typically needed only once in a lifetime. Greater awareness can help enable more informed conversations about cardiovascular risk and prevention.
On Lp(a) Awareness Day, we support efforts to increase understanding and dialogue around this important cardiovascular risk factor.
