In Malta, elderly people can benefit from the Carer at Home Scheme because it helps them stay living independently in their own home while getting financial support from the Government to employ a carer of their choice.
Here’s how it benefits them (in a simple way):
1) Financial support to pay for a private carer.
If approved, the elderly person can receive up to €9,000 per year, paid monthly into their bank account, to help cover the cost of employing a carer.
This makes home care much more affordable, especially for seniors who need daily help.
2) Help with everyday needs at home.
The scheme supports elderly people who need assistance with daily living, such as:
-personal hygiene and getting dressed
-meal preparation and eating support
-mobility help (walking, transferring safely)
-reminders (including medication routines)
-companionship and supervision
The main goal is helping the person remain safe and comfortable at home, rather than needing a residential home.
3) Freedom to choose their own carer.
4) Keeps their independence and improves quality of life.
Having a carer at home often means the senior can:
-keep their routine
-stay in familiar surroundings
-reduce loneliness
-feel more confident and independent
-This can be a big emotional + mental health benefit for many elderly people.
5) Eligibility (important points).
To qualify, generally the applicant must be:
-60+ years old
-assessed to confirm they really require the service
-employing a carer who has a recognised qualification (and if it’s a foreign qualification it may require recognition)
6) What documents are usually needed.
You normally need:
-an application form
-a medical report signed by the GP
-a copy of the carer’s qualification
-a notarised employment agreement
-proof the carer is in regular employment (Jobsplus / Identità info if applicable)
