There are times when we wake up with our mind and emotions in a jumble. Something is weighing heavily on us.

When we have a practice of meditation, we turn to this wondrous practice to find a way to still our racing thoughts and tumultuous emotions.

Like a bird with two wings, first we practice stopping and arriving, the first wing of meditation. We follow the breath and ground ourselves in the here and now and in the body. Then we turn towards the second wing of meditation, deep looking. We look and observe closely at whatever might be troubling us, and like magic, we can see things more clearly, more objectively.

Meditation gives us that all important perspective, at the same time as it stills our fears and worries, and soothes our troubled emotions.

We can see meditation like a beautiful bird with two wings - the wing of stopping and the wing of deep looking.

If there is no space between what the mind brings up and how we react, we will always be a slave to the dictates of the mind. The ✨️SECRET✨️ is to find ways to create that space so that we can see the larger picture, so that we are not caught up in a roller coaster of emotions, so that we can observe the egocentric melodrama and slowly start to choose different ways of behaving, responding and nor reacting, forming new neural pathways.

A mindful exercise I find much benefit in is to sit down and reflect on my values - what they are and how my life is currently aligned, or not, with them. I believe that my life should be steered in the directions that augment my joy, my love, and my being a better version of myself. And so I engage in this task yearly, bi-yearly at times, when my growth develops with eye-opening momentum.

The task is simple. I list 8 qualities which are important for me, what I am calling values. These are not religious values like we learnt in chatecism, although some might, indeed, overlap. These are the most important aspects of my life, be they activities, principles, people, or even places.

Some things which have made it on my list with regularity are my Tribe - my family and friends - the Environment, my Growth and Development, and Spirituality.

Each broad category is generally more finely nuanced... for instance, what I was working on last year in relation to my growth and development is not what I am currently prioritising. People change. I've changed, and, therefore, that's why I sit down and reflect on my values with some regularity, so I can keep abreast of how my inner energies are guiding me and what my inner truth requires honoring.

Once my list has taken shape, I also reflect on how my life currently aligns with my values. What changes can I implement in order to live a life which more truly honours my priorities? How can I tweak? What must be reduced in order to allow space for what is to grow?

With the end of the year around the corner, I find that this is an excellent exercise to incorporate into my end of year reflections and aspirations for a new year.

I have been rather quiet in the last period as I have been dedicating much of my time and resources to myself, having taken a deep dive into my own inner work. Allow me to share that it has been beautiful and exceedingly rewarding. As my own journey of growth and development unfolds, I am invariably drawn again to sharing the wondrous practice which started it all for me - meditation.

If you are available and you wish to, I'd like to invite you to join me for a Free Online Meditation session this coming Sunday, from 8.15-8.45 am. If you wish to join, kindly send a DM so that I can share the Teams link with you.

Invite clarity and spaciousness of mind by joining this free online meditation session. Meditation is an opportunity to be with what is, to lean into the present moment, to shed what weighs on your shoulders and wake up more fully to the joy and beauty of life as it unfolds moment by moment.

Sunday 9th November

The nervous system speaks to us in subtle ways, and if we are not used to listening, the loud mind might drown out what our body is saying. But our body knows very well what, and who, is safe or not.

The practices of coming home to the body, of doing the body scan, of checking what's going on in the body several times a day, and of doing gentle exercise can help build a connection that may not currently be very strong.

And then the wisdom of your body will guide you true.

May I be peaceful and light in my body and in my mind.

May I be safe and free from accidents.

May I be free from anger, fear and worries.

May I know how to look at myself with the eyes of understanding and love.

May I be able to recognize and touch the seeds of joy and happiness in myself.

May I learn how to nourish myself with joy each day.

May I be able to live fresh, solid and free.

Mindfulness and Meditation are experiential actions not rational processes. They are hands on and practical. Only can only understand and appreciate them through living them, like summer fruit can only be enjoyed through the act of eating.

This was my aim today - to make the aliveness of mindfulness an experiential process. I enjoyed delivering the session and leading the meditation, but the joyous energy my seashell activity generated in the group was something else.

Laughter, giggles, excited screeches... Adult women taken back to childhood exuberance. An immersion in the moment, meeting life directly through the senses with an immediacy powered by joyful awareness.

They all left smiling, they all left reflecting about the ways they meet life this way already. They all remembered that play and curiosity, time away from the norm, and time for the self are powerful acts of self care.

Thank you Hospice Malta for introducing Mindfulness and Meditation to your valued volunteers.

Current research shows that trauma is much more widespread than we think. While not all trauma leads to PTSD, both what is call trauma with a small -t and Trauma with a capital -T are very real, and lead to many consequences of a physical, emotional and/ or psychological nature.

Trauma doesn't always look like horrific accidents, war, blood and gore. It can also look like neglect, abuse, grief and disappointments.

Healing from trauma is possible and growing enough to accommodate that which has hurt you can be a beautiful and is definitely a very empowering process. If you have experienced trauma, you don't need to suffer alone. Seek the help you need. And don't give up if the first (second or third) therapist you try aren't the right fit. Keep looking until you find someone who can help you from a place of compassion!

Passionate about Life

I am eager and enthusiastic about all forms of activities which help us live in the NOW. I am a lover of the sea, a snorkeller and a SCUBA diver, and in winter I enjoy trekking and looking for natural materials such as sea shells, sea glass and driftwood which I use to create art, jewellry and house decor. Waking up to living in the NOW has changed my life completely and I believe that sharing this blessing can help others to be more content as well.

I am now in my third year of my mindfulness journey and I feel that by waking up to the NOW I have also woken up to contentment, gratitude and the shared human experience. I no longer feel isolated and I find that there is beauty all around us. My practice has changed my life, it has given me clarity and direction, and I no longer suffer from destination and deferred happiness.

The most profound teachings I have learnt are the simplest:

1. What I foster grows
