🧐 Why Herniated Discs Most Often Occur at L4–L5 and L5–S1
🦴 1. They Are the Body's "Major Weight-Bearing Points."
The lumbar spine, specifically the L4–L5 and L5–S1 segments, is situated almost at the "bottom" and must bear the full force of the upper body down towards the pelvis. Every time we stand, walk, lift, or bend, the discs in this area sustain the greatest pressure, making them prone to accelerated "wear and tear" and subsequent "herniation."
⚙️ 2. They Have the Most Movement.
L4–L5 and L5–S1 are the joints with the highest degree of motion, allowing us to flex, twist, and extend the back. However, increased movement means the discs must also withstand significant shear force. This causes the outer ring of the disc (annulus fibrosus) to degenerate more quickly, making it easier to rupture or herniate.
⚡ 3. The "Sciatic Nerve Root" Passes Through This Area.
The nerve roots of L4, L5, and S1 combine to form the major sciatic nerve. Consequently, if a disc herniates and compresses the nerve here, it causes the symptom of "radiating pain down the leg" or "numbness/weakness in the leg," which is the most common complaint in patients with a slipped disc.
🪑 4. Due to Poor Sitting, Standing, and Lifting Habits.
Slouching while sitting, prolonged sitting, or lifting objects by bending the back (instead of bending the knees) dramatically increases the pressure on L4–L5 and L5–S1. This accelerates disc degeneration and herniation, especially among office workers, drivers, and heavy laborers.

The L4–L5 and L5–S1 discs are thus the "Structural Weak Points" of the lower back, as they must bear heavy weight + endure extensive movement + and are in close proximity to the largest nerve roots.
