๐Ÿ“šโœจ KSU January Recap โœจ๐Ÿ“š

January may have been exam season, but that didnโ€™t stop the KSU executive from coming together for quality time and our regular meetings ๐Ÿค We also finally received our quarter-zip order - keeping the exec board warm and cozy through the winter days on campus โ„๏ธ

Our Education Officer kicked off Kokka Academy 2025 with its first edition, AI Strategies That Work for Studying, supporting students ahead of exams and thesis submissions. A big thank you to Dr Dylan Seychell for delivering such an insightful and informative session ๐Ÿ‘

The chessboard made its return to Quad (briefly!) before narrowly escaping Storm Harry ๐ŸŒฌ๏ธโ™Ÿ๏ธ Donโ€™t worry - itโ€™s safe and will be back very soon.

Our PRO and VPI were also invited to the UM Strategic Plan, where they gained insight into the universityโ€™s trajectory for the next four years.

To top it all off, we hosted this semesterโ€™s AMSM-NTSA, offering students 24/7 study spaces at the KSU-PwC Common Room and Kokka Salott in Studentsโ€™ House ๐Ÿ“š There were also plenty of snacks and drinks to enjoy throughout NTSA, kindly provided by our sponsors - a huge thank you to them for their continued support and contribution to students ๐Ÿ’›

And this is just the beginning! We canโ€™t wait to bring you more exciting semester two events, including the AMSM Car Treasure Hunt, Sports Week, and the highly anticipated KSU Studentsโ€™ Fest this April ๐ŸŽ‰

Yesterday, KSU acted on its promise to involve itself more directly in the current Industrial Action between UMASA (the University Lecturer Union), the Ministry for Education and University. KSUโ€™s request for an in-person meeting between representatives from KSU and the Ministry for Education was accepted by the latter and this morning the meeting took place.

During this meeting, KSU discussed the current state of the negotiation process between the parties to the Industrial dispute and expressed its concerns regarding the recently issued directives which may potentially delay the publishing of exam results for this Semester. On this note, KSU expressed its concerns to the Minister regarding the slow progress so far and stressed that any increase in salaries due to lecturers stemming from this collective agreement should ideally be covered by a proportional increase in Government funding, so as to not place further strain on limited University resources. Importantly, with students now being affected directly, KSU has strongly advocated with the Minister and with UMASA that all possible efforts are made and their full focus is directed to the swift resolution of this issue.

The Minister Onor. Dr. Clifton Grima made it clear that he has personally intervened in this process, to try and expedite the process. Moreover, the Minister also informed KSU that a conciliatory meeting between the parties is scheduled for tomorrow, whereby all parties will be at a table, attempting to reach a mutually acceptable offer for University Lecturerโ€™s conditions and renumeration for the upcoming years.

Should no solution be found, KSU will be escalating its involvement, through acts legally available to it, all of which are being considered. This so that it, alongside any affected students may place all possible pressure as appropriate.

KSU Statement on the Escalation of UMASA (University of Malta Academic Staff Association) Industrial Action and Potential Impact on Students

KSU has recently learned that UMASA directives relating to the Industrial Action between the Union, UM and the Ministry for Education will be escalating in light of the failure to reach a consensus between the parties on the demands for a collective agreement.

Until today UMASA had opted to strictly undertake directives which did not impact students directly, limiting their directives to the ban from organising or attending administrative or management meetings. This is something which KSU itself had advocated directly with UMASA for, and KSU observes that over its period of communication with UMASA the union has made efforts to ensure that as far as possible students are not impacted.

However, this recent escalation has resulted in directives which will impact University Students through withholding of examination marks.
Very importantly, this withholding of marks will not mean that examination scripts will not be graded, but rather that if the situation persists for long, students may expect their results later than usual. Nonetheless, KSU deeply regrets the possibility that Students may be adversely affected and will continue to undertake every possible action it can to put pressure on the parties to find an amicable solution to the dispute. KSU is also attempting to get in contact with the Ministry to exert further pressure to find an end to this situation before students feel the adverse effects.

We urge students not to panic, as there is still time for a solution to be found between the parties before effects are felt. All possible efforts are being explored by KSU which is treating this situation as critical.

KSU asserts that the situation should not have reached this stage and that it is worrying that, once again, students have ended up in the middle of an industrial dispute. Students are innocent parties in all this.

Unfortunately, the resolution of this conflict does not depend on KSU, but rather that all parties (UMASA, University and the Ministry for Education) arrive at an amicable solution between them. We shall nonetheless be exerting all possible pressure that this is done as soon as possible. We are prepared to take all possible actions to protect students.

On Monday, the Prime Minister stated that Malta has received an informal invitation to join the Board of Peace. Malta has not yet given a reply as to if it will join, as the Prime Minister says that membership will be decided on the basis of national interest.

Any decision beyond an unequivocal rejection of this invitation would be a betrayal of Maltaโ€™s national interest on the international stage.

The boardโ€™s chairman is the US President Donald Trump, the leader of an administration which has not only threatened EU member states via economic coercion in the form of tariffs but also funded and supported the regime which gave rise to Gazaโ€™s destruction and the genocide of the Palestinian people. He would also personally hold sweeping powers, including final authority over the charterโ€™s interpretation and veto control over major decisions. Malta should not further appease such behaviour from an alleged ally.

Worse still, the Board has a military arm. That raises the prospect of a selective, weaponisable alliance which may act beyond its current UN mandate, which is a reasonable prospect considering the wording of the Boardโ€™s Charter is not limited to Gaza and the Chairmanโ€™s preference for force without consultation of International bodies. Our fear is that this body, operating under a โ€œunified command acceptable to the Board of Peaceโ€ rather than the usual international peace-keeping chain of command, acts unilaterally in future conflicts without the UNโ€™s in-built safeguards.

A better use of Malta's influence and relationship with the US would be to persuade them to abolish the UN Security Councilโ€™s Veto. That way, the far more robust and legitimate UN can be as efficient as it was in the past when it was allowed to operate more freely, and negate the discussion for a need for any external boards run by one individual,

Lending Maltaโ€™s name to this US-dominated initiative, which members include Israel and invitees include Russia, represents the betrayal of what this countryโ€™s people believe in and the selling-out of Maltaโ€™s soul. Moreover, it goes against the spirit of our Constitution, which states that โ€˜Malta is a neutral state actively pursuing peace, security and social progress among all nations by adhering to a policy of non-alignment and refusing to participate in any military alliance.โ€™

Maltaโ€™s students, its people and its leaders have been courageous in the past. We have stood up to larger nations who threatened to bully or cajole us into joining in on initiatives which go against our principles, and we should be ready to do so again.

It is now up to the Prime Minister and the Government to do the right thing by standing strong in our name for Malta's principles. Reject the Invite.
