🚨 From Off-Duty to On-Scene: ED Nurses in Action 🚨

Whenever a serious or complex incident occurs in the community, the ED Incident Support Team (IST) is mobilised from off-duty hours to support pre-hospital teams on scene while allowing on-duty crews to continue responding to other emergency calls.

📊 IST activity – last 25 days:
• 🚒🚑 12 activations (fires, CBRNE incidents, collapsed buildings, armed police interventions & search and rescue)
• ⏱️ 51 hours of on-scene and operational coverage
• 👩‍⚕️👨‍⚕️ 10+ ED nurses responding across multiple incidents

The Emergency Department remains committed to strengthening its strategies and procedures to ensure the highest standard of emergency care, no matter the situation.

Illum inqajmu kuxjenza dwar l-użu korrett tan-numru ta’ emerġenza 112 u nagħtu rikonoxximent lill-professjonisti dedikati li jwieġbu meta kull sekonda tgħodd.
Bħala parti minn din l-inizjattiva, ħadna sehem f’żewġ attivitajiet ta’ għarfien - waħda fit-8 ta’ Frar u oħra llum - bil-għan li nkomplu ninfurmaw lill-pubbliku dwar l-importanza ta’ użu responsabbli tan-numru 112.
Grazzi lill-ħaddiema kollha għall-impenn, il-kuraġġ u s-servizz tagħhom lejn il-komunità.

📞 112 Day — Emergency Number Awareness

Today we raise awareness about the correct use of the 112 emergency number and recognise the dedicated professionals who respond when every second counts.
As part of this initiative, we participated in two awareness events - one held on the 8th February and another today - aimed at educating the public on the importance of using 112 responsibly.
Thank you to all emergency responders for their commitment, professionalism, and service to our communities.

The Emergency Department is currently responding to a prolonged incident following the overturning of a gas-carrying vehicle in Marfa.

Incident Support Team nurses, the Emergency Physician Response Unit, and Emergency Ambulance Responders are on site to provide medical support and ensure the welfare of all rescuers 🚑🚨

This is a delicate operation being led by the Civil Protection Malta and is expected to take several hours to conclude.

Adverse cold weather conditions are currently affecting parts of Malta, increasing the risk of slips, falls, and cold-related illness. There is no need for freezing temperatures for a dangerously low body temperature to occur, particularly among elderly and vulnerable persons.

🧓👵 Please check on elderly relatives and neighbours regularly:
🏠 Keep homes adequately warm
🧣 Encourage warm clothing and hot drinks
⚠️ A simple fall, especially if a person remains on the ground for some time, can lead to a dangerously low body temperature.

📞🚑 If a low body temperature or serious injury is suspected, CALL 112 immediately.

Stay alert, stay safe, and look out for one another.

On the occasion of the 25th anniversary of the Civil Protection Malta, Mater Dei Hospital ED formally recognises the dedication, expertise, and service provided by its members over the years.

Emergency Nurses, Ambulance Responders and Physicians working within the pre-hospital setting have, for many years, worked in close collaboration with the Civil Protection Department across a wide range of emergency responses, including complex rescues and major incidents. This long-standing inter-agency cooperation has been essential in ensuring effective coordination, timely interventions, and the delivery of high-quality emergency care to the community.

Mater Dei Hospital ED extends its appreciation to the Civil Protection Department on this significant milestone and thanks all its members for 25 years of commitment to public safety and emergency response.
