Fanta Orange bottles imported from Algeria have been urgently recalled in Malta after tests revealed excessive levels of the artificial colouring E110, also known as Sunset Yellow.

The Food Safety and Security Authority issued the alert, urging the public not to consume the affected product due to health concerns. E110 is used to give soft drinks and sweets their bright orange colour, but high doses have been linked to allergic reactions, hyperactivity in children, and potential damage to the liver and kidneys.

The European Food Safety Authority recently tightened regulations on the use of E110, lowering the acceptable daily intake and calling for stricter controls on its use in food and drink across the EU.

Local authorities confirmed that this specific batch of Fanta Orange exceeds the EU’s permitted limits for the additive. Consumers are advised to check their products and dispose of them immediately.

Updated Public Health Notice

Confirmed Health Risk: Excessive Vitamin D levels in “FOLIDI” Supplement

Further to the precautionary notice issued regarding the Vitamin D supplement “FOLIDI”, the Health Authorities have now confirmed that the product contains excessive levels of Vitamin D, beyond what is declared on its label.

Excessive intake of Vitamin D can lead to serious health risks, especially if consumed over time. Thus, the public is urgently advised to take the following actions:

• Immediately stop consuming “FOLIDI”.
• Do not replace with another Vitamin D containing supplement
• Contact the Malta National Poisons Centre on 1774 for further medical advice. The service is available Monday to Friday, from 8:00 AM to 8:00 PM.
• Return any remaining product to the pharmacy from which it was purchased.

Wara l-avviż ta’ prekawzjoni li kien diġà ġie maħruġ rigward is-suppliment ta’ Vitamina D “FOLIDI”, l-Awtoritajiet tas-Saħħa issa kkonfermaw li dan il-prodott fih livelli eċċessivi ta’ vitamina D, ogħla minn dawk iddikjarati fuq it-tikketta tiegħu.

Konsum eċċessiv ta’ Vitamina D jista’ jwassal għal riskji serji għas-saħħa, speċjalment jekk jittieħed għal perjodu twil ta’ żmien. Għalhekk, il-pubbliku qed jiġi mħeġġeġ b’mod urġenti biex jieħu dawn il-passi:

• Iwaqqaf minnufih il-konsum ta’ “FOLIDI”.
• Ma jissostitwixxix dan is-suppliment b’ieħor li jkun fih Vitamina D.
