✨ Osteopathy vs Relaxing Massage - What’s the Difference? ✨

Recently, I’ve noticed that many people are not fully aware of the difference between osteopathy (my profession) and relaxing massage.
That’s why I thought it might be useful to share a short post explaining the main differences:

🔹 Relaxing Massage

- Focus: relaxation, reducing muscle tension, stress relief

- Training: usually shorter courses or diplomas in massage therapy

- Helps with: stress management, general well-being, temporary relief from tension

- Goal: relaxation and improved sense of well-being

🔹 Osteopathy

- Focus: finding and treating the root cause of pain or dysfunction

- Training: a 4–5 year healthcare degree with in-depth medical and clinical training

- Approach: a hands-on approach aimed at improving mobility, reducing pain, and optimising overall function

- Helps with: back and neck pain, posture issues, sports injuries, as well as more complex conditions like herniated discs, sciatica, and joint degenerative changes

- Goal: long-term recovery, prevention of future problems, and supporting the body’s natural self-healing ability

✨ Both can make you feel better in different ways: massage is excellent for relaxation and stress relief, while osteopathy is a healthcare treatment aimed at addressing pain at its root cause and supporting more complex conditions.

🌿 Dry Needling at Olga Colombo Osteopathy 🌿

Have you ever had tight, sore muscles that just don’t seem to relax, or felt a hard, painful point in your muscles that just won’t go away?
Dry needling is a gentle technique that uses very thin needles to directly target those “knots” (also called trigger points) inside the muscle.

✅ Releases muscle tension
✅ Reduces pain and stiffness
✅ Improves mobility and blood circulation- a key step in recovering from pain or injury

Dry needling is often recommended for back and neck pain, headaches, sciatica, and many other conditions.

I have been practising dry needling for several years, and in my experience it’s one of the most effective ways to eliminate trigger points and chronic muscle tension. Dry needling works at a deeper level, directly inside the muscle, targeting the problematic area or trigger point rather than more superficial techniques.

As part of your osteopathic treatment, dry needling can be included when appropriate, always with the aim of reducing pain, restoring balance and helping your body move and feel better.

👋 Hi everyone! I’m Olga Colombo, an Italian Osteopath born in Milan 🇮🇹

I graduated with honours in Osteopathy from the University College of Osteopathy in London in 2019. After that, I gained valuable experience at one of Singapore’s top clinics — Orchard Health Clinic — before moving to Malta in 2021, where I worked at the largest osteopathy clinic on the island.

What I love most about my job is seeing the gratitude in my patients' eyes when they start to feel better. Helping people overcome physical pain — especially when it affects their quality of life — is truly rewarding.

I also enjoy the human connections this profession brings: meeting people from all walks of life has been a constant source of personal growth.

After nearly 6 years working in established clinics, I felt it was time for a new challenge. I’m happy to share that I’m now starting my journey to launch my own osteopathy practice here in Malta!
