Non-communicable diseases (NCD's) like heart disease and mental health conditions cost the economy a lot.
Different patterns are observed in different regions of the world. However, one thing is for sure: a sick population is financially expensive to sustain, anywhere in the world.
It is estimated that, during the period 2011-2030, NCD's will cost the global economy 30 trillion USD ($30,000,000,000,000). [Source: PAHO]
An NCD is not only a health problem. It is also a huge economic issue!
Most NCD's could easily be prevented though.
For example:
๐ adequate exercise,
๐ฌ smoking cessation, and
๐ a healthy diet
all help lower the risk of coronary artery disease (the cause of most heart attacks).
Think about it... If you buy an apple instead of a cigarette, you somehow reduce poverty worldwide.
One of the ways to decrease the incidence of NCD's, and hence their financial impact, is by educating people about them. This is preventive medicine.
Let us make healthy choices. Let us stay healthy.
