CARVE Africa Enhanced sexual reproductive and menstrual health knowledge base for a more informed decision-maker

In the past our team functioned as a community run organization training on menstrual health and hygiene with the use of menstrual cups throughout Malawi. We are now taking lessons learned and networks made to a larger scale with this NGO hoping to expand and create impact in our niche.

Introducing our brand-new Integrated SRHR & Menstrual Health Manual 📘✨
A huge milestone for CARVE Africa — and a game changer for our upcoming health-systems strengthening work with German Development Agency.

This manual brings together everything our nurses, youth leaders, and community teams need to deliver accurate, stigma-free, practical SRHR and menstrual health education. It’s fully interactive, filled with games, discussions, and facilitator prompts — designed for real Malawi settings, in Chichewa even 🤓.

Why this matters:
When frontline workers have the right tools, the entire health system becomes stronger. Better information means better decisions. Better decisions mean safer communities, healthier youth, and more empowered girls and women.

We can’t wait to roll this out across our GIZ districts — strengthening clinics, schools, and community outreach one training at a time. 🥳🥳

A little photo recap from Dedza ✨
Our ED and DD joined our District Coordinator for deep-rural monitoring visits—and honestly, it filled our hearts right up.

One of the best moments? Seeing our menstrual health manual literally on its last threads from so much use. That’s impact. That means the women we trained last year have been using these tools to share accurate, empowering information in their communities.

We often hear that people “don’t have resources” to do their jobs—but when the right tools are created with care, translated well, and supported properly, they’re used until they fall apart. Our Chichewa MHH manual is proving just that.

These visits were part of our UNFPA-supported work to make sure our impact is real, sustainable, and community-led.

From bumpy roads, dusty paths, nsima-eating hands, and the warmest welcomes—you reminded us exactly why we do this. 💛🌍

✨ Big welcome to our newest team members at ! ✨

We’re thrilled to have Chisomo join us as our new MEAL (Monitoring, Evaluation, Accountability & Learning) Coordinator — and to introduce Chifundo, Martha, and Tisu, who will be leading district-level work across Malawi to keep our programs running smoothly and with quality.

From period underwear to menstrual cups to the most comprehensive reproductive health education, we’re ready to kick off long-awaited programs that put girls and women first. 💪🏽🌍❤️.

This weekend CARVE welcomed 💫 — a surgical oncologist from Australia and long-time partner in crime of our ED (throwback to their first mission together in El Salvador 👩‍⚕️✈️).

Emilia joined us in rural Dedza, wrapped in chitenge by our powerhouse District Coordinator Chifundo, meeting women in our menstrual cup program, hearing stories, eating nsima 🍽️, and yes… even climbing Dedza Mountain (her choice 😜).

We dove deep into the realities here: some of the highest cervical cancer rates in the world and child marriage still deeply entrenched. Heavy truths, but visits like this remind us why the work matters. 💙 we are still here, trucking along. Come visit, donate AND talk about us. Keep an eye out as we make good on our strategic plan by improving access by improving …..

From our recent baseline assessment in Dedza. We are busy identifying major gaps left by USAID that we can try to fill so at least some girls and women can still get access and information regarding their Sexual Reproductive Health. These stakeholder meetings will inform our project design utilizing our US private donations. 🥰🥰. We are working on a shoe string here but making moves!

This moment almost went uncaptured.
Here’s Shammah, our Operations Manager, helping our new gardener, Stephano, fill out forms to open his very first bank account — so he can get paid directly, securely, and begin building financial history.
🤓
Opening a bank account in Malawi means access to savings, easier payments, and the first step toward financial independence.

At CARVE, we do more than just sexual and reproductive health. We mentor, train, hire, and invest in the people around us.
Everyone who passes through CARVE should leave more equipped — with knowledge, skills, and confidence for the future.

Happy World Health Worker Week!
We’re taking a moment to shout out global changemakers and our own health worker champions.

We might sound like a broken record—but it’s true: CARVE wouldn’t be where it is today without the skilled hands and hearts who’ve walked alongside us and continue to support our work- whether through donations, review of our curriculum or simply talking about our work-we see you!

From El Salvador to Malawi, these incredible folks have shaped our vision and pushed forward patient advocacy for better health outcomes. Here’s to them!

Today, we visited the Grace Pads workshop to learn more about their products and explore potential collaboration. 👏🏾We discussed CARVE Africa’s commitment to quality and diversity in reusable pads to meet specific needs, including product specifications, pad sizes, and kit creation. 🩸🩸🩸The amazing team at Grace Pads is enthusiastic about joining us on this journey to challenge the status quo and deliver better-quality products to girls and women in Malawi. 🤝This visit marked the beginning of what we hope will be a meaningful partnership.

Yes yes yes. This is a fundamental right we have overlooked as a global effort for far too long. It is time to recognize reproductive health knowledge coupled with QUALITY period products is the respectful direction we need to take. Long gone are the days of just the “donation game”. Together building knowledge, awareness and interventions with a human capacity approach we can bridge these menstrual health gaps. ⏰Yes, it takes more time. 💰Yes, it takes more resources. 📚Yes, we need to enhance the skills of , and local leaders to provide services for girls and women in a safe environment. 💛But it’s possible, one human at a time. We have seen it and done it Donate today to be a part of the actual work on the ground-www.carveafrica.org. Excerpt from NYT:https://www.nytimes.com/2025/01/04/opinion/girls-school-menstruation.html

🩸A Night to Remember! 🩸

This week, CARVE Africa hosted what might be Malawi’s first-ever garden party dedicated to menstrual health—and wow, it went better than we had imagined.

Under the beautiful evening sky at Kaliso Art Gallery, we highlighted incredible local artists showcasing the strength, resilience, and beauty of Malawian women through their art. We also held a silent auction to raise funds for our menstrual health programs, with an outpouring of support from every corner.

The high-level turnout was inspiring—leaders, ambassadors, UN Reps, government stakeholders, change-makers, and women from various sectors all came together to show that when we uplift each other, we create powerful change. Three ladies came from Mzuzu to speak about their experience with and Betti of course showed everyone how Nyanda (local cloth) is used throughout Malawi.

CARVE Africa is redefining the conversation around menstrual health, not just as a health issue, but as a conversation about quality products for all, opportunity in school and work, and bodily autonomy.

A huge thank you to everyone who joined, supported, and stood in solidarity with us. Here’s to more nights like these! 2025 is going to kick off with a bang! 🌸
