Together for Inclusion in Lilambwe

Solidarity • Inclusion • Dignity
On January 26th in Lilambwe, over 50 persons with disabilities received essential support through the partnership between DAFI and UPD.
Soap, cereals, and salt were distributed but more importantly, hope and dignity were shared.
Thank you to DAFI for the funding and to our amazing volunteers for serving the community.
Together we can do more.

Fostering Disability Inclusive Societies for Advancing Social Progress 2025.

UPD

On December 3rd, 2025, UPD, in partnership with Disability Rights Fund, proudly hosted a vibrant and impactful celebration in honor of the International Day of Persons with Disabilities, under the theme: “Fostering Disability Inclusive Societies for Advancing Social Progress 2025.”

Held at the Dzaleka Refugee Camp in Malawi, the event brought together diverse personalities and communities, united by a shared vision of building inclusive societies grounded in dignity, participation, and progress.

The day was not only a space for dialogue, it was a true celebration of creativity, resilience, and community spirit. Participants enjoyed inspiring activities including poetry, dance, theatre, and football, each showcasing the talents and voices of persons with disabilities.

We extend our heartfelt gratitude to all those who contributed to making this day a joyful and inspiring moment of solidarity. Together, we move forward toward a future where disability is never a barrier to joy, leadership, or social progress.

“Disability is certainly not inability.”

Empowering voices, advancing inclusion.

Recently, UPD hosted representatives from Disabled Women in Africa (Diwa) as part of a survey titled “Participation of Women with Disabilities in Community Leadership.

This initiative aimed to explore the barriers and opportunities for women with disabilities to take on leadership roles in their communities.

The initiative featured two remarkable women leaders, Madam Elness Munyenyembe and Ms. Jenny Pawi, who drive conversations on inclusion, empowerment, and leadership for women with disabilities across Africa.

Together, we continue to champion equal participation and amplify voices that matter.

Dialogue for Change: UPD Listens to Vulnerable Populations

UPD recently visited Lilambwe village in Dowa District to engage with vulnerable members of the community of persons living with disabilities, and parents of children with disabilities, with critical hardship.

This interaction was organised to hear directly from them about their daily struggles, to understand what support they need most, and to explore together sustainable, and long-term solutions.
A particular focus was placed on ensuring equal access to education, and removing barriers that prevent people with disabilities from attending school and fully participating in learning opportunities.

Through capacity building, social advocacy, awareness raising campaign, and providing support services (including mobility assistance and counselling), UPD is committed to creating an inclusive environment where every person is respected, supported, and able to thrive.

At UPD, we believe that development is measured by how we treat the most vulnerable, no one should be left behind.
Support UPD to turn these priorities into concrete results. Share this post, follow our next steps, and stay engaged.
Contact UPD if you can contribute equipment, volunteer time, technical expertise, or financial support.

Monday, 22 September 2025, first School Year at Umoja Secondary School

On 22 September 2025, a historic moment took place as Umoja Secondary School officially opened its doors for the very first academic year!
For our students, it marked the beginning of a new school year, celebrated with the morning assembly, a true symbol of unity and discipline ,before heading into their classrooms.
This first academic journey is more than just a beginning; it is an opportunity to grow, to learn, and to build a brighter future together.
At Umoja Secondary School, we believe every student carries unique potential, and we are committed to guiding them toward academic excellence and personal growth.
We wish our students and teachers a successful school year filled with knowledge, discoveries, and achievements.
