ABC Hearing Clinic and Training Centre ABC Hearing Clinic and Training Centre EARS Inc. In the past year alone, the ABC clinic has examined 2,000 people and fitted more than 400 hearing aids.

audiologists Peter and Bec Bartlett are responsible for establishing the first audiology clinic in Malawi in sub-Saharan Africa. Opened in 2013, the clinic is well equipped, with an adult and paediatric sound booth for diagnostic testing, objective hearing assessment equipment (OAE, ABR and ASSR), and a laboratory where custom ear-moulds are made on-site. The staff also travels to various parts of the country, visiting health clinics and schools and providing treatment for adults and children with hearing loss who cannot travel to the clinic in Lilongwe.

This past week, our passionate audiology team of 3 dedicated Clinicians and 6 enthusiastic student clinicians had the privilege of traveling to Bandawe School for the deaf in the Northern Region of Malawi. This outreach mission focused on providing audiological assessments, hearing aid fittings, and counseling services to the amazing special needs students and staff at the school.

We were warmly welcomed by children whose smiles and energy can light up any room. Despite communication barriers, the connection was strong and full of joy, curiosity and mutual respect. Interacting with these incredible students gave us a deeper appreciation for their resilience and unique strengths.

Throughout the days, our team made sure each child was seen, heard, and valued. We emphasized a message close to our hearts:

Your Future is bright
Your abilities are powerful
Your dreams are valid with no limits attached.

They may have a hearing difference, but there is NOTHING they cannot achieve when supported and empowered. Their determination continues to inspire us all.

One highlight came from speaking with Dan Chagomelana, one of our student clinicians who is a future leader in audiology. He shared that this experience taught him what it truly means to lead with confidence, humility, and purpose. With each child he assisted, he learned the importance of patience, compassion, and understanding; not only as a clinician, but as a human being.

"Being trusted to take care of them showed me that I must also trust myself" Dan reflected. "Every small improvement in their hearing meant the world."

This mission reaffirmed why we serve:
To ensure that every person, regardless of hearing ability, receives the care, encouragement, and opportunities they deserve.

We left Bandawe inspired by the strength and spirit of the Deaf Community. We are excited to continue learning, supporting, and advocating for inclusion, accessibility, and hearing health for all.

This year, we've embraced a mission close to our hearts with our Project: Support Hearing Aid Rehabilitation and Education (S.H.A.R.E), a journey that began to touch lives across Malawi. Our dream is to bring gentle audiological assessments and life changing hearing aid fittings to 4 deaf schools, namely, Karonga, MUA, Bandawe and Embangweni; schools for the deaf.

With every fitting, we're also nurturing hope by training special needs teachers in the tender care of hearing aids, ensuring devices are clean, and they're stored with love for the children who rely on them.

This month, our team visited Karonga School for the Deaf, where we had the privilege of delivering brand new hearing aids to our dear friends. The smiles we witnessed are a testament to the power of hearing.

See the touching moments in our photos and if this warms your heart too, consider joining us on this journey.

It's time to shine a spotlight on our October Hearing Hero.

Meet Petrina Dodds Buckley, a dedicated supporter from Australia who went above and beyond by personally flying over with an order of hearing aids we'd been eagerly awaiting. Knowing how time consuming shipping from Australia can be, she took the initiative to bring them herself, ensuring they arrived earlier than expected.

These hearing aids will make a huge difference, helping us serve more patients in Malawi with restored hearing and renewed confidence. A heartfelt thank you Petrina for your incredible effort.

We're proud to share that our Audiologists, Dave Dyson and Lucy Jamali Banda represented ABC Hearing Clinic at a transformative ear and hearing health conference in Salima, hosted by Macoda. Themed "Introduction to Audiology", they trained volunteers and field workers on identifying hearing loss, emphasizing key signs like muffled hearing or ear drainage, which often go unnoticed in mild cases. They also covered ear anatomy, proper hearing aid care (batteries and storage), and the dangers of using cotton buds or Q-tips for cleaning the ears.

Using audiograms, they highlighted normal hearing versus degrees of hearing loss, empowering attendees to connect those in need with our services. Dave and Lucy stresses the urgent need for civic education in Malawi to combat misconceptions about hearing health, noting that 75% of mild cases are missed. The feedback? Overwhelmingly positive, with calls for more conferences and outreach!

Dave and Lucy encourage upcoming audiologists to integrate civic education into daily practice and explore creative outreach like music and drama to reach more communities.
Let's keep amplifying hearing health together!

🎉Big cheers for Cohort 6 as they dive into their practicals with a heartfelt outreach at Children of Blessing Trust, a remarkable NGO dedicated to rehabilitation and preschool education for kids with unique needs!

💙Our Audiology team hit the ground running, delivering essential hearing screenings to these amazing children, ensuring early detection and support. For complex cases, we've seamlessly connected families to our clinic for specialized care, building a bridge to brighter futures. 👂✨

Despite challenges like limited on-site equipment, sensory sensitivities in kids, and ensuring follow-up care, we're tackling them head-on! We're using play-based testing to engage young patients, hosting caregiver workshops to boost awareness, and teaming up with fellow unique needs health service providers to ensure equitable access.

Join us in celebrating this milestone and stay tuned as we deepen our partnerships to reach even more patients in need; one ear at a time.

Our team recently conducted a school screening at EDGE VIEW ACADEMY where we carried out otoscopy, Tympanometry, ear canal management, and hearing screening.

The key findings included a significant number of children presented with earwax, the majority had normal hearing and a few cases of hearing loss were identified and referred to our main clinic for further management.

The school's response was very positive, and parents expressed appreciation for this collaborative effort to safeguard their children's ear and hearing health. We are pleased to share that we will be returning to continue the assessments, ensuring that every child has the opportunity to be screened.

Together, we are making a difference, one child and one ear at a time.
