Mental health experts have faulted Zalewa Police officers who arrested a 68-year-old man for attempted su***de.

According to Rebecca Msoliza, Neno Police spokesperson, the suspect has been identified as Wisiki Kaliponda from Balaka district.

Msoliza told us that Kaliponda, who is now in police custody, wanted to end his life by throwing himself into the Shire River at Zalewa roadblock.

Meanwhile, Msoliza said Kaliponda will answer for the attempted su***de case in court next Tuesday.

However, David Chomba, a mental health expert, described the arrest as unacceptable, considering the rights of mentally sick patients.

Chomba explained that a mentally sick person often considers su***de as an option.

Speaking to MIJ Online, Chomba suggested the need to release Kaliponda from police custody and provide him with the treatment he requires.

Among others, Chomba called for the swift gazetting of the Mental Health Act of 2025 to address cases such as these.
