Nkhoma Mission Hospital in Lilongwe has embarked on a journey of constructing a Surgical Centre at the facility with financial support from Medical Benevolence Foundation (MBF) and African Mission Healthcare (AMH).

According to Chief of Surgery at the hospital, Dr Jens Vaylann, currently the facility conducts 2000 surgeries per year due to limited capacity but once the centre construction works are done, the hospital will have a capacity of conducting 6000 surgeries per year.

Dr Vaylann said among others, the surgical centre will provide surgical care, Intensive Care Unit (ICU), learning centre as well as surgical wards.

Gregory Nikkel, Chief Executive Officer of Medical Benevolence Foundation, said the whole project cost $2.3 million approximately over K3 billion but they are committed to pump in $1.5 million which is over K2 billion. Nikkel hopes the project will run for a period of 2 years.

General Secretary for Nkhoma Synod, Reverend Vasco Kachipapa, called for the governments support in providing reliable power supply at the facility saying the hospital is experiencing power interruptions due to its location to a low voltage site, hence proposing a direct line from Nkhoma grid to the facility.

Principal Secretary in the Ministry of Health, Dr Samson Mndolo, expressed gratitude saying once completed the surgical centre will accommodate more patients and increase the number of surgeons in the country.
