PARTNERSHIP FOR BETTER MENTAL HEALTH CARE

Today, we were honored to welcome Patriots of Project Care in Malawi to our institution as they conducted an assessment of our facility in preparation for the donation of medical equipment and supplies in the coming weeks.

The purpose of their visit was to evaluate our readiness to receive, utilize, and sustain the donated equipment effectively. We are pleased to share that after a thorough inspection and engagement with our team, they expressed satisfaction that our institution is fully prepared to receive and manage the equipment responsibly for the benefit of our patients.

This forthcoming donation will significantly strengthen our capacity to deliver quality mental health services, improve patient care, and enhance our overall service delivery standards.

We sincerely appreciate Patriots of Project Care in Malawi for their commitment to supporting healthcare institutions and investing in the wellbeing of our patients. Partnerships like these play a vital role in transforming healthcare services and bringing hope to those we serve.

We look forward to receiving the equipment and continuing to work together for a healthier community.

🌳 FRIDAY CULTURE AT ZOMBA MENTAL HOSPITAL 🌳

At Zomba Mental Hospital, we believe in building a positive culture of doing something meaningful every Friday as one team.

Today, the entire hospital came together for a Tree Planting Exercise as part of our commitment to environmental conservation and mental wellness.

We are especially proud to have our management team among us — the Director General, the Chief Nursing Officer, and Program Coordinators — leading by example. Their presence and active participation continue to motivate and inspire staff members to work together for a common purpose.

Planting trees is more than just beautifying our surroundings — it is about creating a calm, therapeutic environment for our patients, improving air quality, and contributing to a greener future for our community.

🌿 Together, we grow.
🌱 Together, we heal.

Malawi Joins Global Commemoration of World Cancer Day

Lilongwe, Malawi - The Ministry of Health and Sanitation has joined the global community in commemorating World Cancer Day, observed annually on February 4th. This year's theme, "United by Unique," emphasizes the need for people-centered cancer care that addresses the needs of individuals, families, and communities.

Speaking at a press briefing, The Deputy Minister of Health and Sanitation, Hon. Charles Chilambula M.P., highlighted the growing burden of cancer in Malawi, with cervical cancer, esophageal cancer, and breast cancer topping the list. The Deputy Minister attributed the rise in cancer cases to risk factors such as HIV, Human Papilloma Virus, and Hepatitis B infections, as well as lifestyle factors like poor diet, lack of exercise, and to***co use.

The Ministry is intensifying prevention and treatment efforts, including universal ART coverage, cervical cancer screening, and male medical circumcision services. HPV vaccination is being upscaled for girls aged 9, and Hepatitis B vaccination is provided to at-risk groups.

"The Government of Malawi is committed to the fight against cancer," The Hon. Deputy Minister said, highlighting the recent launch of the breast cancer awareness and prevention campaigns by the Vice President.

The Ministry will also join Baylor Children's Hospital at Kamuzu Central Hospital on February 13th to commemorate International Childhood Cancer Day, raising awareness of cancers in children.

Speaking during the press conference, the World Health Organization Representative to Malawi, Dr Charles Njuguna, reaffirmed WHO commitment to supporting Malawi to reduce the burden of cancer and ensure equitable access to prevention, early diagnosis, treatment, and dignified care for all.

“I commend the Government of Malawi for its leadership, and our partners for their continued dedication. To all health workers—your compassion and commitment remain the backbone of cancer care in this country. To survivors and families—your voices and advocacy inspire and guide national action” Dr Charles Njuguna

"Good morning, everyone! 🌞

We want to express our heartfelt gratitude to a wonderful gentleman from Namadidi, now residing in Canada, for donating linen (bedsheets, pillow cases, duvets, curtains, and laces) to our Paying ward! 🙏

His father received medical care at our hospital back in the 1990s, and we're touched by this thoughtful gesture. Special thanks to his daughter (pictured in the black and white striped blouse) who represented the family to hand over this amazing gift 😊.

We're committed to taking good care of this precious donation and using it to enhance our quality of care. Thank you again, and let's keep spreading the love! ❤️ "

THE MINISTER OF HEALTH AND SANITATION HIGHLIGHTS PROGRESS AND CHALLENGES IN HEALTH SECTOR DURING THE INTEGRATED HEALTH SECTOR JOINT ANNUAL REVIEW

Lilongwe, Malawi - The Minister of Health and Sanitation, Hon. Madalitso Baloyi, MP has highlighted significant progress made in Malawi's healthcare system under the Health Sector Strategic Plan III (HSSP III) despite various challenges. Speaking at the 2024-2025 Joint Annual Review meeting in Lilongwe on January 22, 2026, Hon Baloyi noted improvements in key areas, including Maternal and Child Health, Disease Prevention, and Health Systems Strengthening.

The Hon. Minister highlighted challenges, including limited financial and human resources, climate-related disasters, and funding shortfalls, which have impacted service delivery and infrastructure development. To address these, the Ministry plans to equip facilities with essential medications and tools, invest in WASH infrastructure, and prioritize construction of new facilities in underserved areas.

“The Joint Annual Review therefore, is an important platform, as it consolidates progress across the Health Sector under one comprehensive review, moving away from fragmented programmatic assessments” Hon Minister. The meeting, themed "Accelerating Universal Health Coverage and Resilient Health Systems through Collaboration and Resource Optimization," aims to review progress and discuss strategies to strengthen partnerships and optimize resources.

The Minister also emphasized the importance of collaboration and thanked stakeholders, Development Partners, and Civil Society for their support. She declared the HSSP III Joint Annual Review meeting officially opened, calling for continued efforts to achieve Universal Health Coverage.

During the opening session of the meeting Hon Baloyi also presented awards to the health facilities that have done well in terms of quality under the Stepwise Quality of Care (QoC) Program, which is a certification program that uses compliance to National QoC Standards to rate the level of quality provided at a health facility. Facilities are rated from 1 Star to 5 Stars after an external assessment. The more the Stars, the better the quality of services. Mwaiwathu Private Hospital and Blantyre Adventist Hospital have 5-star rating, while 6 facilities have a 4-star rating (Zomba Mental Hospital, LION Hospital (KCH), Nkhoma Mission Hospital, Our Lady of Mount Carmel Hospital, St John of God Hospital – Lilongwe, St John of God Hospital – Mzuzu).
The Integrated Joint Annual Review meeting draws participation of Ministry of Health and Sanitation officials, National Aids Commission, International and local health partners, the civil organizations and district council officials.
