In addition to viewing the brain as an organ divided into two hemispheres, it can also be examined by focusing on the four lobes of the cerebral cortex, which is the brain’s outer layer shown in the figure. Each lobe is responsible for specific functions that support how we perceive and interact with the world. The occipital lobe, located at the back of the cerebral cortex, contains the brain’s visual processing areas and allows us to see our surroundings and track moving objects, such as a ball in the air while driving or playing sports. The temporal lobe, found on the underside of the cerebral cortex, is primarily responsible for processing sounds and smells.
The parietal lobe, located toward the upper back region of the cerebral cortex, plays a key role in processing touch and taste sensations. At the front of the cerebral cortex is the frontal lobe, which is responsible for creating behavioral and motor plans. This lobe also supports many complex cognitive functions, including speech and language use, creative problem solving, and the ability to plan, organize, and make decisions.
