At IDOI, we have used intra-arterial chemotherapy successfully to treat liver, kidney, lung, and pancreas cancer.
However, where we have obtained best results treating brain cancer.
All brain tumors are affordable, the difference is that in many of them there is another option, such as neurosurgery. At IDOI we complement neurosurgery or radiation.
Stem gliomas in particular have that difficulty, that the most that can be done in select locations is a biopsy, besides radiation there is nothing.
So, we are an alternative.

Most cancer treatments have stopped evolving and innovating, and one of the main reasons is that the procedures are strict and most of the time are not individualized, meaning that they apply the same procedure to all patients and not consider each patient’s diagnosis, therefore the results are not as expected.
The individualized treatment that Instituto de Oncología Intervencionista (IDOI) applies focuses on attacking one of the most aggressive and incurable types of cancer.
Our mission is to offer compassionate, personalized and sophisticated treatments, focused in reducing the symptoms of cancer and the secondary effects caused by traditional drugs and treatments.
At IDOI we use intra-arterial chemotherapy for the treatment of brain and central nervous system tumors.

According to Cancer Health and American Cancer Society, Lymphoma is increasing in incidence and is a potentially life-threatening disease. One million people worldwide live with lymphoma and nearly 1,000 people are diagnosed with the disease every day, but there continues to be very little awareness of the signs and symptoms of lymphoma.

Some common signs and symptoms include:
- Enlarged lymph nodes
- Chills
- Weight loss
- Fatigue (feeling very tired)
- Swollen abdomen (belly)
- Feeling full after only a small amount of food - Chest pain or pressure
- Shortness of breath or cough
- Severe or frequent infections
- Easy bruising or bleeding

Some types of brain tumors are more common in children than in adults.
Children often present with hydrocephalus (fluid build up in the brain) or the face or body not working properly.
According to KidsHealth, some of the most common types of primary brain tumors in children are:
- Astrocytomas. These form from star-shaped brain cells called astrocytes. They can be cancerous and low-grade (more common in children) or high-grade (more common in adults).
- Ependymomas are cancerous tumors that form from part of the central nervous system called the ependyma. They also can be low-grade or high-grade.
- Brainstem gliomas form in the tissue of the brainstem, the part of the brain that connects to the spine. They can be cancerous and are typically high-grade and fast-growing.
- Medulloblastomas or primitive neuroectodermal tumors (PNETs) are cancerous, high-grade tumors that start in the posterior fossa, a part of the brain near the base of the skull.
- Craniopharyngiomas are non-cancerous tumors that form at the base of the brain near the pituitary gland.
- Germ cell tumors usually form in the te**es or ovaries but can also form in the brain and central nervous system. They can be cancerous.
- Pontine gliomas are cancerous, high-grade tumors that form in a part of the brainstem called the pons.
- Optic nerve gliomas form in or around the optic nerve, which connects the eye to the brain. Most optic nerve gliomas are noncancerous and slow-growing.

27/05/2020

Gliomas are the most prevalent type of adult brain tumor, according to the American Association of Neurological Surgeons, accounting for 78 percent of malignant brain tumors. They arise from the supporting cells of the brain, called the glia.

Glial tumors include the following:
- Astrocytomas are the most common glioma, they may occur in many parts of the brain, but most commonly in the cerebrum. People of all ages can develop astrocytomas, but they are more prevalent in adults. In children, most of these tumors are considered low-grade, while in adults, most are high-grade.
- Ependymomas are derived from a neoplastic transformation of the ependymal cells lining the ventricular system and account for 2-3% of all brain tumors.
- Glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) is the most invasive type of glial tumor, tends to grow rapidly, spread to other tissues and have a poor prognosis.
- Medulloblastomas usually arise in the cerebellum, most frequently in children. They are high-grade tumors, but they are usually responsive to radiation and chemotherapy.
- Oligodendrogliomas are derived from the cells that make myelin, which is the insulation for the wiring of the brain.

What our patients are telling to the media about IDOI’s treatment:
- Before each subsequent treatment we do an MRI, which shows exactly that the tumor is decreasing.
- The studies show that thanks to the treatment, IDOI can significantly increase the average survival time of children with a malignant tumor of the brain. In addition, the treatment improves or restores the child’s neurological abilities.
- Around 90 percent of patients treated for IDOI-1 showed improvement, and a large group regained a significant part of their function and were able to go back to normal life - describes Michał Piłatowski.

Balance between treatment and quality of life
Let's help Marek fight!

In May last year, we wrote about 6-year-old Marek, who parents raised money to fight a huge malignant tumor of the brain. It worked - Marek with his dad Michał every month fly to Monterrey, Mexico for chemotherapy. Unfortunately, around 80,000 are still needed for treatment.

- The treatment that Marek uses is special chemotherapy that is given directly to the tumor. It's risky and expensive but it works. Before each subsequent treatment we do an MRI, which shows exactly that the tumor is decreasing - communicates positive boy dad information.
In addition, Marek participates in rehabilitation every day, thanks to which he slowly regains health. In March this year, boy and dad flew to eighth chemotherapy, but by the coronavirus pandemic are stuck in Monterrey. The boy and his dad missed Easter and the birthday of Piotr (brother/son).
The problem is also with work because Michał Piłatowski was to leave for a week, not for three months.

- Fortunately, I have a great boss and let me continue to work remotely. It's difficult because we are 7 hours apart. My wife sends me photos and I based on emails and photos I work - adds Marek's dad. - Syn he misses his mother and brothers a lot.
He is sad that he tried it so many times to come back already and still can't. We sit for days in the apartment. We fear going out somewhere. Most stores are closed. Here it is peak incidence. To gather we have about PLN 80,000 left at the collection. This is the amount needed for treatment - he adds Mr. Michał.

Little Marek heals in The Instituto de Oncología Intervencionista (IDOI). The institute was created by a multidisciplinary team. Doctors Alberto Jerónimo Siller Aguirre and José Alberto García de la Fuente decided to lead practices after many cases of successful cooperation to help patients and give hope to children. The team consists of specialists and scientists from different fields, among others: oncology, interventional neuroradiology, pediatrics, anaesthesiology, intensive care, neurosurgery and research. Thanks to many studies and attempts to use many techniques, procedures and medicines for the treatment of various types of cancer.

Doctors from the center take care of very complex cases, which require extraordinary measures - such as with Marek.
Treatment is carried out at one hospital in Monterrey, in Mexico.

- Current treatment plan for the disease
The brand is called "Chemotherapy Super Selective Intravascular Artery Combination ", "IDOI-1" for short. Consists of two treatments in full dormant. According to the information from doctors, all served drugs are approved by the FDA, however, they are not used in such combination and this method nowhere else - the boy's dad explains.
The first treatment involves administration of drugs through a catheter inserted through the femoral artery (puncture into the femoral groin), which then goes to the brain as close to the tumor as possible. The method application is called IntraArterial (IA). The second procedure is the administration of medicines into the spinal canal - this is the IntraThecal (IC) method. - It is very important that everything the procedure takes 2-3 days. No it requires long and constant hospitalization - emphasizes Michał Piłatowski. - Then Marek can return to normal life in Poland. Treatment must be repeated at 3-5 week intervals.

Before each subsequent stage an imaging test is performed, magnetic resonance imaging. The study also shows indisputably the effectiveness of this method. Then before consultation is carried out at Clinica 0-19, during which you can learn about changes that have occurred since the last treatment, opportunities as they are, threats that have arisen, and set a plan for future action.

Mr. Michał points out that in this treatment the parent is a very important element of the whole process, hence the great emphasis is on informing him about what happens to the child in every treatment stage. Until recently the institute did not brag about its own achievements. Specialists focused to treat children. Only recently decided to "open out "into the world and officially show results of the first years of operation.

- The studies show that thanks to the treatment, IDOI can significantly increase the average survival time of children with a malignant tumor of the brain. In addition, the treatment improves or restores the child’s neurological abilities. Appear new imaging movies as well in practice it looks like this and you can see how different children from different countries cope with treatment and illness. An option has also been introduced for video consultation before the first arrival. This is a great convenience for many families to be able to make contact and talk easy from home about everything important - adds Michał Piłatowski.

A brainstem tumor (DIPG) is a disease that can in a short time change the child's life completely and take everything - from the capacity to performing daily tasks, through speech, movement for ability eating or drinking up to their own lives.

- That is why it is so important to maintain a balance between the applied treatment and the quality of life child. From the information provided by IDOI, around 90 percent of patients treated for IDOI-1 showed improvement, and a large group regained a significant part of their function and were able to go back to normal life - describes Michał Piłatowski.
With comprehensive and comprehensive treatment rehabilitation manages to stop the tumor. Recently, Marek succeeded in getting up from the cart himself, moment figure and wave to the camera. However, this is not the end. The aim of Mark and his dad is playing soccer on vacation. However, this will not succeed if there is no treatment, for which it is needed there are about 80 thousand zlotys.

Marek's treatment can be supported through donations on the official screenshot profile

Types of Benign Brain Tumors according to the American Association of Neurological Surgeons:

- Chordomas are benign, slow-growing tumors that are most prevalent in people ages 50 to 60. Their most common locations are the base of the skull and the lower portion of the spine.
- Craniopharyngiomas typically are benign, but are difficult tumors to remove because of their location near critical structures deep in the brain.
- Gangliocytomas, gangliomas and anaplastic gangliogliomas are rare tumors that include neoplastic nerve cells that are relatively well-differentiated, occurring primarily in young adults.
- Glomus jugulare tumors most frequently are benign and typically are located just under the skull base, at the top of the jugular vein.
- Meningiomas are the most common benign intracranial tumors, comprising 10 to 15 percent of all brain neoplasms, although a very small percentage are malignant. These tumors originate from the meninges, the membrane-like structures that surround the brain and spinal cord.
- Pineocytomas are generally benign lesions that arise from the pineal cells, occurring predominantly in adults. They are most often well-defined, noninvasive, homogeneous and slow-growing.
- Pituitary adenomas are the most common intracranial tumors after gliomas, meningiomas and schwannomas. The large majority of pituitary adenomas are benign and fairly slow-growing. Even malignant pituitary tumors rarely spread to other parts of the body. Adenomas are by far the most common disease affecting the pituitary.
- Schwannomas are common benign brain tumors in adults. They arise along nerves, composed of cells that normally provide the "electrical insulation" for the nerve cells. Schwannomas often displace the remainder of the normal nerve instead of invading it.

The American Association of Neurological Surgeons explains a brain tumor, known as an intracranial tumor, is an abnormal mass of tissue in which cells grow and multiply uncontrollably, seemingly unchecked by the mechanisms that control normal cells.

More than 150 different brain tumors have been documented, but the two main groups of brain tumors are termed primary and metastatic.

Primary brain tumors include tumors that originate from the tissues of the brain or the brain's immediate surroundings.

Metastatic brain tumors include tumors that arise elsewhere in the body (such as the breast or lungs) and migrate to the brain, usually through the bloodstream. Metastatic tumors are considered cancer and are malignant.

Today is DIPG Awareness Day at USA

Diffuse Intrinsic Pontine Glioma (DIPG) is a particular subtype of brain stem glioma and an aggressive diffusely infiltrative brain tumor of childhood arising in the ventral pons. DIPG intermixes with healthy tissue, presenting poorly demarcated tumor margins in neuroimaging. The tumor classically involves greater than 50% of the pontine axial diameter, engulfs the basilar artery, and does not enhance with gadolinium on MRI. These characteristic findings on diagnostic imaging distinguish DIPG from the less aggressive focal brainstem cancers.
The median age at diagnosis is 6–7 years and its median survival is 9 months.
Children typically experience symptoms for a month or less before they are diagnosed. Clinical signs and symptoms of DIPG result from compression or dysfunction of anatomic structures at and near the ventral pons where the tumor arises.

DIPG can cause the following symptoms:
- Double vision
- Difficulty in controlling eye and eyelid movement, and facial expression
- Difficulty chewing and swallowing
- Difficulty speaking
- Difficulty urinating
- Weakness in the arms and legs
- Loss of balance
- Difficulty walking
- Clumsiness
- Headaches (especially in the morning)
- Nausea and vomiting
- Fatigue

The treatment provided by IDOI for Diffuse Intrinsic Pontine Glioma (DIPG) with grim prognosis may reduce cancer symptoms, increase survival rates, and minimize drug side effects.
