East Meets West: Myopia Management in the US and China

Take stock of each country’s approach to disease control and patient care and see what can be easily implemented in your practice.

In both countries, myopia has emerged as a significant public health issue, though with differing scopes and policy responses. In China, myopia is considered a national public health crisis, with prevalence rates in schoolchildren exceeding 80% in some regions. The government has met the need with policies that include mandatory outdoor time in schools, nationwide screening programs and screen use regulation.

In contrast, the United States has seen a steady increase in myopia prevalence, especially in children, but public health measures remain largely localized or driven by individual practice rather than part of a national strategy.

Alejandra López Zúñiga, estudiante de Diseño Industrial de la Facultad de Ingeniería UAQ, desarrolló Relid, un dispositivo auxiliar que ayuda a reparar la película lagrimal mediante calor controlado, ideal para tratar el ojo seco provocado por la disfunción de las glándulas de Meibomio —𝘂𝗻 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗯𝗹𝗲𝗺𝗮 𝗰𝗮𝗱𝗮 𝘃𝗲𝘇 𝗺á𝘀 𝗰𝗼𝗺ú𝗻 𝗽𝗼𝗿 𝗲𝗹 𝘂𝘀𝗼 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗹𝗼𝗻𝗴𝗮𝗱𝗼 𝗱𝗲 𝗽𝗮𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗮𝘀 📱💻.

Día mundial del Queratocono 👁️
Según cifras mundiales en México se ha identificado que de cien pacientes con problemas de córnea, dos padecen Queratocono; por otra parte, se ha registrado su prevalencia en 1.8% de la población adolescente mexicana, y de ésta, el 28% llega a requerir un trasplante de córnea.
Recuerda acudir a un Licenciado en Optometría, el cual está formado para detectar a tiempo la presencia del queratocono y brindar el tratamiento adecuado 👓
