My name is Maria Kurilina and I’m a co-founder of i3medicine. Here is our story.
I became sick with an “unidentifiable” disease 8 years ago, after traveling in Malaysia. Fatigue, weakness, moving pain in joints and muscles, stiff neck, brain fog, multiple sensitivities to food, chemicals; a long list. Eventually, I had to quit my grad school and Ph.D. thesis and my life halted. I have seen over 40 Western medicine doctors in four countries, including the US: infectious disease specialists, immunologists, internists, neurologists. The problem was that my blood tests were ok. I had nothing to prove my symptoms, and 70% doctors have sent me to a psychologist. When I was pregnant, one Californian doctor ventured for a diagnosis “imaginative parasitosis”, explained that “this is all in your hand”. It was a nightmare. I was suffering from severe pain and inflammation, but had nothing to prove my pain. It took us years of figure it out3adz. Eventually, my husband (he is a scientist, geneticist) took my blood, extracted DNA at his friend's lab and ran DNA microbiome and florescence staining tests at two companies. They found bacterial biofilms in blood and it led us to an answer. We found a specialty lab for chronic infections and sent my blood there. Finally, I had a diagnosis - chronic Lyme disease. We started our research and found tens of thousands of patients with very similar stories. They may have symptoms overlapping with chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS), Fibromyalgia, neuropathy, chronic intestinal pseudo-obstruction and many other disorders. But the cause was the same: chronic Lyme disease, the "great imitator". It appeared to be the most spread and fastest growing infection in the US, with 300,000 new cases a year according to CDC. The worst news was "there is no cure from chronic Lyme dIsease". Actually, there is no cure for most chronic conditions.
Treatment was a long journey, which led me and my husband to a hyperthermia clinic in Germany, a number of Lyme doctors, both “conventional” and “alternative”, leading international conferences. We completely changed our environment by moving from San Diego to rural Baja, Mexico. We have met an overwhelming number of fellow patients struggling from similar symptoms on their own, usually mistreated and misdiagnosed.
We have tried about every procedure and protocol on the book: from months-long shifts on antibiotic cocktails to bee venom, electromagnetic field machines, ozone and infra-red therapy. We have studied mechanisms of action and clinical research behind the methods applicable to chronic diseases in general. Eventually, we have learned about and started to apply truly integrative healing methods practiced at the advanced European and Asian medical resorts. These methods combine powerful physiotherapy and biophysics-focused procedures with detoxification, immune system restoration, nutrition and microbiome management for optimal outcomes. And this integrative treatment worked. Gradually, my symptoms waned or vanished. I am back to active life and can enjoy a glass of local red wine on an occasion.
Our healing journey was really transforming and we decided to share our experience and knowledge with other patients suffering from chronic diseases. We opened the first i3medicine Healing Center in Rosarito, B.C., Mexico, a 40 min highway drive from the US border in San Diego.
