Spain has formally banned the transit of US military aircraft and naval vessels carrying arms, ammunition, or related equipment to Israel via its bases at Rota (Cadiz) and Moron de la Frontera (Seville), according to sources familiar with the US–Spain Joint Committee. The move comes amid growing scrutiny of Washington’s weapons support for Israel’s genocidal war in Gaza, where more than 66,000 Palestinians have been killed.

Spanish officials emphasised that both bases remain under Spanish sovereignty and require Madrid’s explicit authorisation for all operations. Under their defence agreement, the US can use Spanish bases under certain conditions, but controversial cargoes such as arms shipments to Israel now require case-by-case approval.

On September 23, Spain’s Council of Ministers approved a “total” arms embargo on Israel, banning arms exports, fuel transit, and imports from occupied territories, marking a sharp escalation in Madrid’s diplomatic and moral pressure on Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s government over Gaza genocide.

Italy’s Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni said Tuesday she was accused of complicity in genocide in a complaint to the International Criminal Court over Rome’s support of Israel’s bombardment of Gaza.

Meloni said in comments broadcast by local media that she had been named in a filing by an advocacy group for Palestinians that accused her and others of complicity by supplying arms to Israel.

She said the complaint also targeted her Defence Minister Guido Crosetto and Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani and she also thought that Roberto Cingolani, head of defense group Leonardo, had been named.

“By supporting the Israeli government, particularly through the supply of lethal weapons, the Italian government has become complicit in the ongoing genocide and the extremely serious war crimes and crimes against humanity committed against the Palestinian people,” wrote the authors of the court filing.

“I don’t think there is another case in the world or in history of a complaint of this kind,” Meloni said in the televised comments.
