The weight loss that follows a successful bariatric surgery makes most patients feel younger. But a new study suggests that following bariatric surgery, some patients show signs of being biologically younger, as well.

At Stanford University, researchers looked for evidence of change in bariatric surgery patients by measuring their telomeres — regions of repeating DNA sequences at the end of a chromosome that grow a little shorter with age and chronic illness. Telomeres are considered a biomarker of the aging process.

Weight loss surgery tied to Lower risk of heart failure

Obese people who get surgery to lose weight have half the risk of developing heart failure as do patients who make lifestyle changes to shed excess pounds, a recent study suggests.

The study team examined data on 25,805 obese people who had gastric bypass surgery, which reduces the stomach to a small pouch, and 13,701 patients who were put on low-calorie diets. Following half of the patients for at least four years, people who had gastric bypass were found to be 46 percent less likely to have developed heart failure.
