A risk factor is anything that increases a person’s chance of developing cancer. Although risk factors often influence the chance to develop cancer, most do not directly or by themselves cause cancer. Cancer treatments usually have two goals – to kill cancer you have and to prevent cancer from coming back but sometimes it returns. For example, at SMC we encourage regular monitoring and visiting periodically our facilities to boost the immune system depending on the patient's individual condition to lower the chances of a recurrence. However, medical treatments are not the only tool to prevent a recurrence. We also encourage patients to adjust their health habits, such as the foods you eat (or don’t eat) and the amount of exercise you get after your cancer treatment is over can also help you prevent cancer from returning.
