The weight loss that follows a successful bariatric surgery makes most patients feel younger. But a new study suggests that following bariatric surgery, some patients show signs of being biologically younger, as well.

At Stanford University, researchers looked for evidence of change in bariatric surgery patients by measuring their telomeres — regions of repeating DNA sequences at the end of a chromosome that grow a little shorter with age and chronic illness. Telomeres are considered a biomarker of the aging process.

Too many women gain too much weight during pregnancy, CDC says

A new study from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention finds that nearly half of the pregnant women in American gain too much weight during their pregnancies. It’s well-known that type 2 diabetes can cause medical complications in certain organs, including the brain.

But overweight and obese people with early-stage type 2 diabetes have more severe abnormalities in brain structure and cognition than normal-weight people with type 2 diabetes, according to a new study in Diabetologia, the journal of the European Association for the Study of Diabetes.

Having type 2 diabetes and being overweight, then, can combine to have a greater effect on brain structures.

Weight loss surgery tied to Lower risk of heart failure

Obese people who get surgery to lose weight have half the risk of developing heart failure as do patients who make lifestyle changes to shed excess pounds, a recent study suggests.

The study team examined data on 25,805 obese people who had gastric bypass surgery, which reduces the stomach to a small pouch, and 13,701 patients who were put on low-calorie diets. Following half of the patients for at least four years, people who had gastric bypass were found to be 46 percent less likely to have developed heart failure.
