Smoking KILLS. Out of every 10,000 deaths in Malaysia, up to 3,500 deaths are smoking-related, annually.

Health Minister Khairy Jamaluddin will be tabling the To***co and Smoking Control Bill soon that has general end game features since the provisions within the bill ban smoking and possession of smoking products including electronic ci******es (va**ng) for those born after 2005. The goal is to have less than 5% of the population smoking by 2040.

Here are some factors that you should consider before you light up.

A study indicated that the greatest burden of ill health due to smoking are cardiovascular diseases (CVD), chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and lung cancer.
● CVD (1.69 million deaths)
● COPD (0.97 million deaths)
● Lung cancer (0.85 million deaths)
Smoking contributes to the increase of non - communicable diseases (NCDs) in people as young as 15 years of age.

Examples of non-communicable diseases include lung cancer.

There is a constant rise in the number of NCD patients due to smoking. Ni****ne narrows and clogs the blood vessel resulting in men becoming impotent.

Human papillomavirus (HPV) is the most common s*xually transmitted infection.

In Perak, 35 outbreaks of influenza-like illness (ILI) have been recorded from January this year until July 2 with 26 active clusters.

Thus far, media reports indicated that the clusters have emerged in Selangor’s Gombak and Petaling districts. Details of cases and clusters are not available in the public sphere.

Did you know that more Malaysians contracted syphilis compared to HIV in the year 2020? There were 3,500 syphilis cases compared to 1,038 HIV cases. Syphilis - a s*xually transmitted infection (STI), specifically a bacteria known as Triponema Pallidum.

This STI is transmitted when one comes in direct contact with syphilitic chancres - painless but infectious sores. The symptoms would differ according to the stage it is at.

Some of the symptoms at the secondary stage include:
● Headaches
● Swollen lymph nodes
● Fatigue
● Fever
● Weight loss
● Hair loss
● Aching joints

At the latent stage there are no symptoms. Life threatening symptoms emerge at the tertiary stage such as the following:
