Working with governments, communities, and global partners to sustainably transform animal and aquatic food systems—making them nutrient-dense, climate-smart, and inclusive—to improve lives, health, and the environment in low- and middle-income countries. Part of the CGIAR 2025-2030 Research Portfolio, the CGIAR Sustainable Animal and Aquatic Foods Program aims to boost access to nutritious foods while reducing emissions and supporting inclusive livelihoods. By combining diverse livestock and aquatic systems, we will create opportunities to address local challenges with integrated solutions tailored to specific contexts.

A significant step forward in addressing the silent pandemic of Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR). International Water Management Institute (IWMI) - Indian Institute Of Technology, Roorkee team recently had a meeting with the Chief Secretary of Uttarakhand, introducing the alarming situation of waterborne AMR affecting human, animal, and environmental health, particularly in the Song River Basin in . The seriousness of the issue and our research work in this direction were appreciated.

Subsequently, we hosted the workshop on “Water Pollution and Anti-Microbial Resistance (AMR) in the Song River Basin, Uttarakhand: An Emerging Concern”. The event saw strong participation from all the relevant government departments, who demonstrated their clear willingness to address this pressing environmental challenge. The discussions were highly insightful and collaborative. We are now looking forward to the next steps, to appraise the Chief Secretary about the workshop findings and continuous engagement for the co-development of the Integrated Basin-scale Pollution and AMR Control Plan to effectively combat AMR spread and transmission.

Chickens can silently carry bacteria that learn to resist antibiotics, and a new study shows why this matters for farmers and families.

Researchers looked at poultry farms in Soroti and Wakiso and found important differences in resistance patterns between free-range and semi-intensive farms.

Good farm hygiene and careful antibiotic use go a long way in keeping flocks healthy.

The global antimicrobial resistance debate rarely reflects the realities in low and middle income countries. Farmers face tough decisions with limited access to vets, diagnostics and safe alternatives.

This new piece by Arshnee Moodley unpacks why antibiotic use cannot be understood through high income lenses and why stewardship must support real people on the ground.

🌿 A decade of partnership advancing the One Health approach from Thai Nguyen

💡 Over the past 10 years, the Thai Nguyen University of Agriculture and Forestry ( ) and the Thai Nguyen University of Medicine and Pharmacy ( ) have worked closely with the Vietnam One Health University Network ( ) and the International Livestock Research Institute ( ) to pioneer the integration of One Health into education, research, and community practice.

📘 Together, these partners developed Vietnam’s first One Health textbook (2017) and the One Health Practical Manual (2024), laying a foundation for future generations of public health and veterinary professionals. Today, Thai Nguyen hosts four One Health field sites, where students work directly with local communities to enhance food safety, prevent zoonotic diseases, combat antimicrobial resistance, and protect the environment.

🌾 Building on this success, the CGIAR Sustainable Animal and Aquatic Foods Program continues to strengthen the link between science, education, and practice—toward a healthier, safer, and more sustainable for the community.
