“Thank you… thank you so much… thank you…” she uttered under her breath, with tears trickling down her sunken cheeks. As she slowly walked away with her fragile body supported by John, the smiles shared between them were the biggest satisfaction I could have had.
It was a morning just like any other. After my grocery shopping, I was walking towards my car when a skinny, young boy with old worn out clothes caught my eye. He was pacing in front of an optical shop, looking through the glass window peering at glasses inside the shop.
“Hey! Get your hands off the window!” A shop attendant shouted at the young boy, who took a few steps back and hid his hands behind his body. He ended up leaning on my car which was parked in front of the shop, and he stood frozen without the courage to move a muscle. “Where do you stay? Do you need a lift home?” I asked him gently. He nodded his head timidly, and I ushered him into my car.
“Wow sir, your car is so beautiful, thank you!” He regained some composure in my car, clearly still shook from the incident in front of the optical shop. After a short 5 minutes drive, the boy led me to a small lane with bumpy, sandy road. “Stop here, this is the place.” He pointed at a run down, shabby looking house. “Sir, could you wait for me for awhile please? I promise it won’t take too much of your time,” he begged as he got down the car, with sincerity filling his bright black eyes. “Okay,” I replied, wondering what he was up to.
After around 1 minute, he was leading a fragile, skinny looking woman out of the house. She was clearly having difficulties to see clearly, as the boy was holding her hands with every step she took. As they reached my car, the boy carried the woman on his back, and started to walk slowly around my car. “Mama, one day, I will earn enough money, and I will have a car like this. I will bring you to the shop to buy a glasses for you ma, trust me,” the woman etched a smile, and nodded her head.
“I know a place,” I said, and they were looking at me with curiosity filled eyes as my words were enough to stop the boy in his tracks. I was able to help the woman to see clearly, a simple but very crucial part of our lives, which we can take for granted very easily.
