and Iris Sofeaโs story found its strength through kindness.
At just 12 years old, Iris Sofea arrived at Mount Miriam Cancer Hospital feeling scared and overwhelmed. Diagnosed with ๐ฆ๐๐๐ฎ๐ฅ๐ฅ๐จ๐๐ฅ๐๐ฌ๐ญ๐จ๐ฆ๐ ๐ฐ๐ก๐ข๐๐ก ๐ข๐ฌ ๐ ๐ซ๐๐ซ๐ ๐๐ง๐ ๐๐ ๐ ๐ซ๐๐ฌ๐ฌ๐ข๐ฏ๐ ๐๐ซ๐๐ข๐ง ๐ญ๐ฎ๐ฆ๐จ๐ฎ๐ซ ๐ญ๐ก๐๐ญ ๐ฆ๐จ๐ฌ๐ญ ๐จ๐๐ญ๐๐ง ๐๐๐๐๐๐ญ๐ฌ ๐๐ก๐ข๐ฅ๐๐ซ๐๐ง ๐๐ง๐ ๐๐๐ง ๐ข๐ฆ๐ฉ๐๐๐ญ ๐ฆ๐จ๐ฏ๐๐ฆ๐๐ง๐ญ ๐๐ง๐ ๐๐๐ฅ๐๐ง๐๐ she came to MMCH for Craniospinal Irradiation (CSI) Tomotherapy, a journey that would test her courage in ways no child should ever have to face.
She arrived in a wheelchair, eyes filled with fear, gripping her motherโs hand as she entered. It was a moment that reflected both vulnerability and immense bravery.
The very first day of treatment was filled with fear, with tears rolling down her cheeks. But our Radiotherapy (RT) team made sure she never felt alone. Through gentle words, laughter, music, and constant reassurance, fear slowly turned into comfort creating a beautiful bond with the RT team and helping her look forward to her radiotherapy sessions. By the third week, Iris started walking again, a moment filled with hope and gentle joy.
The final days of her radiotherapy treatment were not easy. Painful skin reactions brought tears, but the team stayed by her side, playing her favourite songs and talking her through every session, ensuring she faced each treatment with courage.
On 12 November, Iris Sofea completed her radiotherapy journey with us. With a bright smile and a heart full of gratitude, she gifted our RT team a handmade card filled with colours, drawings, and a heartfelt message that touched all our hearts.
Just a simple card.
A powerful reminder of why we do what we do.
Irisโ journey continues as she moves forward to surgery and chemotherapy. And through it all, we are cheering for herโevery step of the way.
