Importance of Bone Mineral Density (BMD) in Classifying Severity of Bone Demineralisation

Bone Mineral Density (BMD) is a crucial measurement used to assess the strength and health of bones. It reflects the concentration of minerals, mainly calcium and phosphorus, within the bone tissue. BMD is essential for classifying the severity of bone demineralisation, a process where bones lose their mineral content, becoming weaker and more prone to fractures.

Using tools like Dual-Energy X-ray Absorptiometry (DEXA), BMD is measured and compared to standard values. This helps in diagnosing conditions such as osteopenia (mild bone loss) and osteoporosis (more severe bone loss). The World Health Organization (WHO) uses BMD scores to classify the severity:

Normal: T-score ≥ -1

Osteopenia: T-score between -1 and -2.5

Osteoporosis: T-score ≤ -2.5

Severe osteoporosis: T-score ≤ -2.5 with fractures

Understanding BMD helps guide treatment decisions, monitor disease progression, and reduce the risk of fractures, especially in older adults.

Psychologically this will strengthen the confidence of the patients and encourage them to do the post operative exercises for optimal motion during the rehabilitation period
