π§ Preventing Delirium: Non-Pharmacological Measures (SOS SAD)
Delirium is common but often preventable, especially in older adults. Simple, consistent care makes a big difference.
π΄ SOS SAD approach:
πͺ S β Sit Out of Bed
Encourage sitting out of bed, early ambulation, remove unnecessary lines, and involve PT/OT early.
π°οΈ O β Reality Orientation
Reorient to time, place, and person regularly. Keep clocks and calendars visible and explain care plans clearly.
π S β Sensory Support
Ensure glasses and hearing aids are worn. Use communication aids when needed.
π΄ S β Sleep Hygiene
Avoid caffeine after noon, limit daytime naps, keep days bright and nights quiet, and reduce nighttime disturbances.
π§© A β Activity
Encourage daily routines and cognitive activities like conversation, puzzles, or reading. Involve caregivers.
π₯€ D β Drink & Nutrition
Promote hydration, ensure dentures are used during meals, monitor intake, and supplement when necessary.
