• Essilor Stellest is a spectacle lens designed for myopia control in children — that is, to slow down the progression of nearsightedness.
• It uses a technology called H.A.L.T.: Highly Aspherical Lenslet Target. The lens has a single vision central zone, which corrects for distance myopia just like a conventional single vision lens. Surrounding that central zone are 1021 tiny aspherical lenslets, arranged in concentric rings (11 rings) around the central area. These lenslets are designed to create a “volume of myopic defocus” — a signal that helps slow down the elongation of the eyeball, which is part of how myopia gets worse.
• A 2 year randomized clinical trial has shown a ≈ 67% slowdown of myopia progression in children, when the lenses are worn ≥12 hours per day.
