A world-first experiment just changed how we think about fertility. Scientists at OHSU have induced “Mitomeiosis” — making body cells divide like eggs for the first time!
Could this lead to lab-grown gametes and new fertility options? 🧬
⚠️ Still early-stage research, but full of hope and questions.

IVF Knowledge Corner with Dr. William –
What is Antral Follicle Count (AFC)?

👩‍⚕️ Many women ask, “How do doctors check my egg reserve?” One simple way is through Antral Follicle Count (AFC).

✅ What it means:
AFC is the number of small egg sacs (called follicles) in your ovaries that can be seen during a vaginal ultrasound. These sacs are like “tiny homes” that may grow into mature eggs.

✅ Why it’s important:
• A higher AFC = more egg reserves, usually better fertility potential.
• A lower AFC = fewer eggs, which may make it harder to conceive naturally or respond to IVF treatment.

✅ What’s normal?
About 10–15 follicles is usually considered a healthy number for women of childbearing age.

✅ Age matters:
As women get older, the number of follicles (AFC) usually decreases — that’s why age is such an important factor in fertility.

✅ Not the only factor:
AFC is helpful, but it’s not the whole story. Other things like s***m health, overall lifestyle, and general health also affect fertility.

💡Takeaway:
If you’re planning for pregnancy or considering fertility treatment, talk to your doctor about your AFC. It gives a good picture of your egg reserve and helps guide the right treatment plan.
