Leprosy Awareness | Let’s Promote Facts and Eliminate Stigma

Leprosy (Hansen’s disease) is a chronic bacterial infection that primarily affects the skin and peripheral nerves. It is curable with timely medical treatment and is not highly contagious. Transmission occurs mainly through prolonged close contact with untreated individuals.

Common Misconceptions and Facts:

❌ Misconception: Leprosy is a curse or punishment
✅ Fact: Leprosy is a medical condition that can be effectively treated

❌ Misconception: Patients must be isolated from society
✅ Fact: After starting treatment, patients are no longer infectious and can safely participate in daily life

Key Messages:
• Early diagnosis and treatment prevent disability
• Multidrug therapy (MDT) is effective and widely available
• Social support and awareness are essential to eliminate discrimination

Together, we can reduce stigma, encourage early treatment, and work toward a leprosy-free society.
