💗A huge thank-you to John’s devoted mommy for her effort—and for allowing us to share snapshots of her social story pages. Your dedication is inspiring. 💗
*This is John's FIRST visit to my clinic for developmental assessment. He is 6 year odl and has been receiving early intensive interventions for his social communication delay.
When “John” came in for his appointment, he was understandably nervous and on high alert, while crying he was scanning the room for ‘ threats’.
(“John” is an alias to protect privacy.)
But his wonderful mom was ready.
She gently took out a homemade booklet—a social story she had crafted herself—and told me she had been reading it to him every day for two weeks to prepare him for this visit.
Within minutes, John began to relax.
He seemed to realise this room felt different from past experiences—no dreaded needles today!
His mom explained:
“Dr. Annie, I made this social story to prepare him for today. I’ve been reading it every day for the past 2 weeks… social stories work really well on him.”
And she was absolutely right.
Her thoughtful preparation turned a potentially overwhelming appointment into a calm, manageable one.

Social stories are powerful and effective
They help children—especially autistic children—navigate new, uncertain, or challenging situations by giving them a clear, predictable storyline.
They can help:
✅Clarify expectations
✅Reduce anxiety
✅Build confidence

If your child struggles with new experiences (clinic visits, haircuts, dentist appointments, travelling, etc.), try using a social story.
It might be the key to a smoother, calmer outing for everyone.
