Kidney Care Starts with Self-care
Maintaining kidney health is essential for overall well-being. Here are key ways to keep your kidneys healthy:
✅ 1. Stay Hydrated
Drink enough water daily (about 2–3 liters), unless your doctor advises otherwise. Water helps the kidneys remove waste.
✅ 2. Eat a Balanced, Kidney-Friendly Diet
Limit salt/sodium (avoid processed foods).
Eat more fruits, vegetables, and whole grains.
Reduce red meat and avoid excessive protein if at risk of kidney issues.
Control sugar intake to prevent diabetes.
✅ 3. Control Blood Pressure
High blood pressure can damage your kidneys. Aim for a target of around 120/80 mmHg if you're at risk.
✅ 4. Manage Blood Sugar Levels
Diabetes is a leading cause of kidney disease. Keep blood glucose in check through diet, exercise, and medication if needed.
✅ 5. Exercise Regularly
Aim for 30 minutes of moderate activity (e.g., walking, cycling) most days to help control weight, blood pressure, and blood sugar.
✅ 6. Avoid Smoking and Limit Alcohol
Smoking harms blood vessels, reducing kidney function. Excess alcohol can raise blood pressure and add stress to kidneys.
✅ 7. Be Cautious with Medications
Long-term use of NSAIDs (like ibuprofen) or certain supplements can harm kidneys. Always consult a healthcare provider.
✅ 8. Get Regular Kidney Function Tests
If you have risk factors (like diabetes, high blood pressure, family history), ask your doctor to monitor your kidney function.
✅ 9. Maintain a Healthy Weight
Obesity increases the risk of kidney disease. Even small weight loss can improve kidney health.
