Malaria remains a global health challenge, but it is also a story of progrMalaria remains a global health challenge, but it is also a story of progr and hope.
On this World Malaria Day, we thank everyone around the world especially the healthcare workers, researchers and communities who continue working hard to prevent, detect and treat malaria. Their efforts have saved millions of lives and brought us closer to a malaria-free future.
In Malaysia, we have made significant strides in reducing malaria cases, particularly through strong surveillance systems, community awareness and early intervention.
Featured in this post, Professor Emeritus Dr. Balbir most notably discovered that the monkey malaria parasite, Plasmodium knowlesi, was causing malaria in humans. This was followed by other pioneering work on the molecular epidemiology, population genetics and clinical aspects of knowlesi malaria, placing UNIMASโ Malaria Research Centre on the world map for malaria research.
Together, we can sustain the momentum and move closer to eliminating malaria, for Malaysia and for the world.
