MMA SCHOMOS recently engaged with House Officers from two state hospitals in the northern region. The feedback received was candid, thoughtful, and important.
🔍 Key issues highlighted 🔍
* Inconsistencies in the application of leave policies and training periods due to confusion from HR Division
* Unequal provision of cuti gantian
* Variable practices where medical leave (MC) is deducted from annual leave in some settings but not others
* Disparities in night-shift scheduling, including instances of consecutive night duties without adequate rest (some up to 5 night shifts in a row)
⚠️ These variations reflect inconsistent implementation of policies and we will forward this to MOH for further action.⚠️
💚 Positive practices acknowledged 💚
* Medical Officers who actively assist with ward duties
* Teams that practise structured handovers and do not rely solely on House Officers to memorise patient details
* Departments that prioritise teaching, supervision, and mentorship
* Work environments that are respectful and non-toxic, free from unjustified scolding or public belittlement
✊💪The importance of training and discipline✊💪
We also reminded them that the medical profession is inherently rigorous and that the journey of becoming a doctor inevitably requires discipline, resilience, and personal sacrifice.
Being posted as a medical officer across different parts of Malaysia are an integral part of professional development and should be embraced as opportunities for growth, service, and learning, rather than viewed solely as hardship.
MMA SCHOMOS remains committed to listening, documenting concerns, and advocating for improvements — because House Officers deserve robust structures and equitable policies, not resilience alone.
