Early screening and school-based interventions are absolutely key to reducing the long-term burden of diabetes in our children.

The earlier we detect risks such as obesity, insulin resistance or abnormal blood sugar levels, the better our chances of preventing or delaying complications of diabetes. Some of these measures include

Strengthen school health screenings: Annual weight, BMI, waist circumference and blood pressure checks

Introduce targeted glucose screening: Simple finger-prick tests for overweight children or those with family history or signs of insulin resistance.

Improve canteen offerings, integrate lifestyle education, ensure regular exercise and involve parents.

Train teachers and school nurses to recognise early warning signs such as excessive thirst, frequent urination and unexplained weight loss.

Integrate data systems. Record screening results into national registries.

💙 World Diabetes Day 2025 – “Diabetes and Well-being: Diabetes across life-stages”

On 14 November, we recognise that diabetes affects children, adolescents, adults and older persons alike, and that true care means supporting well-being throughout every stage of life.

As paediatric endocrinologists and healthcare professionals focused on children and adolescents with diabetes

đź’™We emphasise that early recognition of diabetes, whether type 1 , type 2 or other types, is critical.

đź’™Recognise that diabetes goes beyond blood sugar alone: emotional, school, social, and family needs all matter.

đź’™We advocate for fully supported care environments, from home, school and communities

This World Diabetes Day, we recommit to:

🩵Raising awareness among parents, healthcare professionals, teachers and public about early signs of diabetes in children: thirst, frequent urination, unexplained weight loss

🩵Ensuring every child diagnosed receives timely treatment, age-appropriate education, and access to insulin therapy, CGM and pump technology.

🩵Building systems of support that promote well-being across all life-stages, so that a child diagnosed today can grow into a healthy adult

Together, we create a future where every young person with diabetes isn’t defined by their condition—but empowered by our shared care and community.

💙 Diabetes in a Child – More Than Just Sugar Levels. When a child is diagnosed with diabetes, life changes overnight, not only for the child but for the whole family. It’s more than insulin and blood sugar checks, it’s the emotional, social, and financial challenges that many don’t see.

đź’  November is World Diabetes Month, with World Diabetes Day on Nov 14 ,
a time to raise awareness, fight stigma, and stand together with every child living with diabetes. đź’Ş

Why Sleep Matters for Growing Children

Sleep isn’t just rest, emotions, mental and physical health — it’s when vital hormones work their magic. During deep sleep, growth hormone is released, helping children grow, repair tissues, and maintain emotional and metabolic balance.

When children don’t get enough sleep, it can affect:
Growth and puberty regulation
Mood, learning, and concentration
Immunity and metabolism

Medical conditions such as sleep apnoea, asthma, thyroid disorders, or obesity can also disrupt sleep and should be checked if your child snores loudly, sleeps restlessly, or remains tired despite adequate sleep.

Practical steps — consistent bedtime routines, reduced screen time, and calming wind-down activities — can make a big difference.

Quality sleep = healthy growth, sharper focus, and better emotional wellbeing.
