‘Repetition’ and ‘wait for your child to response’ are the keys!

One of my favorite tips for emergent communicators! Model model model (especially in routines!)- then lead in and wait! This strategy is great for all modes of communication- speaking, signing, and AAC!

This strategy also varies by child, some may pick up sooner than others while others may need it modeled many more times. The key is to give lots of exposures and then slowly add in wait time for a child to finish a phrase. If the child doesn’t fill in the phrase, it’s okay, the adult still says it!

What Makes a Good Interaction?🤔

#1 Partner
A communicator, especially parents play an important role in interacting with the child. Initiate play and respond to your child to get 2 way (back-and-forth) interaction.

#2 Activity
Understand your child's interest and choose activity/ toy based on your child's interest. This will help them to concentrate longer and pay more attention in the intreating with you.

#3 Way of Communication
Communication is not only about talking. You may use gestures/ body language to help your child to understand you better.

#4 Intonation
Use exaggerate intonation/ slower rate of speech when interacting with your child, in order to attract his/ her attention.

#5 Response from Your Child
Remember to pause 5-10 seconds for your child to response to your questions. Do not repeat asking questions again and again before you pause for the response. Ideally, you may give the answer to the question asked when your child does not response after 10 seconds pausing.
