A service we are proud to have. We had been referred cases of speech delay quite regularly. Most times we will advise parents to have their child hearing assessed. Now with the service in house - it’ll be a quick one step centre.

I am happy to announce that our audiology unit is able to cater to our paediatric population even from birth!

Hearing assessment is a critical first step in the evaluation of any child with speech delay. Here’s why it’s essential and what the recommendations typically include:

Why Hearing Assessment is Necessary
1. Hearing is foundational for speech and language development.
• Children learn to speak by listening to others. If they can’t hear well, their speech development is often delayed.
2. Hearing loss may be subtle.
• Even mild or fluctuating hearing loss (e.g., due to recurrent otitis media with effusion) can significantly impact speech and language acquisition.
3. Early detection improves outcomes.
• If hearing impairment is identified early, interventions like hearing aids, cochlear implants, or speech therapy can be initiated promptly, improving language development.

When to Assess Hearing
• Immediately upon noticing a speech delay — hearing loss must be ruled out early.
• At any age if there are concerns about speech/language development, even in children who passed newborn hearing screening.
