AIDA is gathering input for our written submission to the upcoming CEDAW General Discussion on Gender Stereotypes. This survey focuses on the experiences of women and girls with hidden disabilities, including autistic individuals and those with psychosocial or intellectual disabilities.

While our primary focus is on these groups, we welcome input from a broad range of perspectives—including non-disabled individuals, men, and allies—to strengthen our advocacy efforts.

The survey will remain open, but for inclusion in our CEDAW submission, responses to be considered in the report must be submitted by 7 February 2025. (Otherwise, take your time......but also don't 😜)

恭喜发财, 年年有余 | Gong Xi Fa Cai, Nian Nian You Yu🧧🐟

On behalf of AIDA, we extend our warmest wishes for a prosperous and meaningful Chinese New Year. This season reminds us of the power of tradition and reflection—whether we’re gathering with loved ones, spending time in solitude, or celebrating with chosen family, we set our intentions for the year ahead.

As we usher in the Year of the Snake, may we embrace this moment to shed old skin and adopt new ideas, new approaches, and a fresh mindset.

Yet, as we step into this new year, we cannot ignore the challenges unfolding around us: sudden funding cuts, livelihoods lost overnight, and the rollback of hard-won policies that champion diversity, equity, and inclusion. We are not disconnected from global politics. For those of us in the Global South—the majority world—this is a wake-up call. How have we become so dependent on external systems that can vanish in an instant?

At AIDA, we believe in charting our own course. We need not wait for someone else to “put fish on our plates” or show us how they fish—we’ve navigated our own seas for generations, discovering new routes and forging innovative ideas. It’s time to reclaim pride in how we do things, to look within for lasting prosperity.

So, as we greet one another with 年年有余, let us remember that true abundance goes beyond mere survival. It is about building a future rooted in resilience, self-determination, and the collective strength of our communities.

Wishing you sincere abundance, renewal, and enduring strength.

Part 2 of The Voices of AIDA and Friends on Leadership Amongst Women and Girls with Disabilities

As times change and new ideas emerge, so do new voices. At AIDA, we share our thoughts on those stepping up to break barriers, challenge systems, and create spaces where everyone belongs. The future of leadership among women and girls with disabilities must be brave, must be new, and must be diverse.

Oops, we missed Day 5 yesterday, so it’s a double post today!

💔 Gender-based violence (GBV) impacts girls with disabilities differently. Bella’s story reminds us of the unique vulnerabilities they face and the urgent need for systemic change.

From being silenced by stigma to encountering inaccessible reporting systems, girls with disabilities often experience violence that goes unseen and unaddressed. Abuse, like Bella’s, highlights the failures in oversight and protections.

🔍 By understanding these unique challenges and amplifying their voices, we can build a safer future. Tailored support, inclusive policies, and data-driven solutions are critical steps forward.

💬 What steps do you think are most important to protect girls with disabilities? Let us know in the comments.

And it’s Day 4 of

💔 Gender-based violence (GBV) doesn’t look the same for everyone. Women and girls with disabilities face unique challenges that often go unrecognised.

From having assistive devices withheld 🦼 to being forced into sterilisation 💉, their experiences are shaped by the intersection of gender inequality and disability discrimination.

🔍 By recognising these forms of violence—like caregiver abuse, financial exploitation, and emotional harm—we can advocate for real change.

And it’s Day 3 of

✨ Intersectionality matters. ✨ Women and girls with disabilities who belong to other marginalised communities—such as women of color, LGBTQ+ individuals, or those living in poverty—experience compounded risks of gender-based violence.

🚧 Systemic barriers, cultural stigma, and exclusion from support services leave many of us without safety or justice.

For autistic women, the gaps are even wider: ❌ Excluded from consent education, misunderstood when reporting violence, and often blamed instead of believed. These failures must end.

Day 2 of

✨ We must change the narrative. ✨ Women and girls with disabilities are disproportionately impacted by gender-based violence, yet we are often left out of conversations—or only seen as victims.

🚫 The stigma, systemic barriers, and lack of accessible support services we face make us more vulnerable. But our voices are 🔑 critical in the fight to end gender-based violence. Inclusion isn’t optional—it’s essential.

💡 This , let’s confront these injustices head-on. Together, we can ensure that women and girls with disabilities are not just part of the conversation but leading the way toward meaningful change.

The 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence begins today.

At AIDA, we are dedicating this time to shining a light on the often-overlooked experiences of women and girls with disabilities—including autistic women—who face alarmingly high rates of violence and abuse.

Why? Because the statistics reveal an unacceptable reality:
📊 Women and girls with disabilities are 2-4 times more likely to experience gender-based violence than their non-disabled peers.
📊 9 out of 10 autistic women report experiencing sexual violence, often repeatedly.

These numbers are staggering. Misconceptions, stigma, and systemic barriers not only increase our vulnerability but also make it harder for us to access support and justice.

Over the next 16 days, we’ll share stories, data, and actionable steps to ensure that our voices aren’t just heard—but that they drive meaningful change.

Together, let’s work toward a world where violence against women and girls—disabled and non-disabled alike—is no longer tolerated.
