𝐅𝐈𝐑𝐒𝐓 𝐃𝐀𝐘 𝐂𝐀𝐑𝐄 𝐒𝐀𝐌𝐄 𝐃𝐀𝐘 𝐃𝐈𝐒𝐂𝐇𝐀𝐑𝐆𝐄 𝐓𝐎𝐓𝐀𝐋 𝐇𝐈𝐏 𝐑𝐄𝐏𝐋𝐀𝐂𝐄𝐌𝐄𝐍𝐓 𝐈𝐍 𝐌𝐀𝐋𝐀𝐘𝐒𝐈𝐀

The Joint Reconstruction Unit of the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery in Universiti Malaya Medical Centre performed the first day care same day discharge Total Hip Replacement on the 7th of May 2025 – the first to be performed in Malaysia.

The patient was a 72-year-old lady with severe hip pain due to hip osteoarthritis. The whole process took place in the Day Care theatre unit. The patient presented to the unit at 8.00 am on the day of surgery, had her Total Hip Replacement by 10.30am, started walking by 3pm and was discharged home by 5pm.

She is doing well. It was a great team work and collaboration between the Departments of Orthopaedic Surgery and Anaesthesiology, Nursing, Physiotherapy and everyone in UMMC with the support of the hospital management.

FIRST DAY CARE SAME DAY DISCHARGE ROSA ROBOTIC TOTAL KNEE REPLACEMENT (TKR) IN MALAYSIA

The Department of Orthopaedic Surgery in UMMC performed our first two Day Care Same Day Discharge ROSA Robotic Assisted Total Knee Replacements (TKR) on 18/10/2023 and 25/10/2023. These patients are the first two ROSA Robotic Day Care Same Day Discharge TKR performed in Malaysia. Both patients are also the 10th and 11th who have undergone successful Day Care Same Day Discharge joint replacement surgeries since the service started in March 2023. Both patients are doing well.
The aim of the Day Care Same Day Discharge joint replacement service in UMMC is to try and reduce our theatre waiting list and it has been a huge success. The whole process takes place in our day care theatre unit where patients present to theatre by 8am on the morning of surgery, have their joint replacement surgery by 11am, start walking by 3pm and are discharged home by 5pm from our day care theatre unit.
Great team work by everyone in UMMC.

Robotic Knee Replacement in Universiti Malaya Medical Centre (UMMC). On the 7th of August 2023 we performed the first two ROSA Robotic Assisted Total Knee Replacement in UMMC. Both patients were suffering from end stage knee osteoarthritis and are currently recovering well after surgery. Robotic assisted knee replacement surgery is performed to obtain a more accurate implant placement and to achieve better functional outcomes. This is a great achievement for the Orthopaedic department and all those involved in obtaining this robotic system in UMMC. The Orthopaedic department now offers robotic assisted knee replacements to our patients in UMMC.

The sukaneka event is definitely compulsory for any family day. The kids had most fun competing in three different games but unfortunately the event organizer managed to make the adults play one game only (water balloon fight) because of insufficient time. Some of the department staff spent the long weekend together at Resort World Kijal for our family day trip! It was a chill and leisurely 3 day 2 night trip with many staff venturing out to look for famous keropok lekor, satar, and celup tepung seafood that the Kemaman-Kijal area had to offer. Here are some pictures taken during our group dinner at Cahaya Mesra Seafood 4. Everyone won something from the sukaneka, and each family also brought home a gift from our gift exchange event. What a way to wrap up the trip! Pictures from the sukaneka will follow 😄
