🌙 Healthy Ramadan Tips — A TCM Perspective

In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), digestion is the foundation of energy (Qi). During Ramadan, protecting the Spleen and Stomach helps maintain energy, prevent fatigue, and support overall balance while fasting.

✨ Break fast with warm foods
After hours of fasting, digestion is in a resting state. Warm water, dates, or light soups gently activate the digestive system and allow Qi to flow smoothly without burdening the body.

❄️ Avoid cold drinks, processed & fried foods
Cold foods weaken digestive Yang, while greasy and processed foods create Dampness and Internal Heat — often leading to bloating, heaviness, acne, and low energy.

🥗 Avoid overeating
Overeating strains the Spleen and causes Food Stagnation, leaving you feeling more tired instead of energised. Eat slowly and stop before feeling overly full.

🚶‍♀️ Engage in light physical activity
Gentle movement like walking after iftar promotes Qi and Blood circulation, improves digestion, and reduces post-meal sluggishness.

🌙 Small mindful habits help the body stay balanced and nourished throughout the fasting month. Happy Ramadan to all of our Muslim friends. 🤗

Treatment for clearing aggressive energy (AE). Aggressive energy is defined as having polluted or contaminated Qi. The presence of redness/erythema at the affected points show the presence of aggressive energy. If left untreated, it may hinder the process of healing. It is usually for those who don’t respond fast to other acupuncture treatments.

Causes of AE:
- Chronic stress or strain (physical, emotional, mental or spiritual)
- Previous illness
- Toxicity (usually prolonged consumption of toxins, toxic environment, drugs, etc)
- Traumatic experience
People with AE usually will have the symptoms of feeling short-tempered or easily annoyed, agitation and frustration & uncomfortable in your own skin.

The concept of the liver governing the tendons 肝主筋 is a fundamental aspect of the body's interconnected system of organs and their associated functions. Traditional Chinese Medicine views the body through the lens of balance and harmony among various organ systems, each organ is associated with specific functions beyond its physiological role in Western medicine

The liver is one of the major organs, and it is responsible for more than just its anatomical functions. It plays a crucial role in regulating the smooth flow of Qi, which can be loosely translated as vital energy or life force, throughout the body. When the liver is functioning properly, Qi flows smoothly, and the body remains in a state of balance.

Tendons refer not only to the physical tendons in the body but also to the broader concept of tissues that connect and support the muscles, joints, and bones. Tendons provide flexibility and strength to the body's movements. Therefore, they are closely associated with the quality of physical movement and flexibility.

According to Chinese Medicine theory, the liver is responsible for maintaining the suppleness and flexibility of the tendons. When the liver Qi is in balance, it ensures that the tendons are properly nourished, allowing for smooth, coordinated and pain-free movements. If the liver's Qi becomes stagnant or imbalanced, it can lead to problems such as tendon stiffness, tightness or pain.

Chinese Medicine also associates specific emotions with each organ system. The liver is connected to the emotion of anger and frustration. When these emotions are experienced intensely or chronically, they can disrupt the smooth flow of liver Qi, potentially affecting the tendons. This is why emotional well-being is considered an important aspect of overall health.

The concept of the liver governing the tendons emphasizes the interconnectedness of organs, emotions and physical well-being. The liver's role in regulating Qi flow is believed to influence the health and flexibility of tendons, making it an essential aspect of holistic approach to health and wellness.

“Rain Water” | 雨水 Yu Shui | 18.02 - 04.03", the 2nd seasonal point (节气) out of the 24 seasonal points in Chinese Calendar . It signals the increase in rainfall and rise in temperature. With its arrival, spring-like scenery starts blossoming: river water defreeze, wild geese move from south to north, trees and grass turn green again.

During the “Rain Water” period, the weather changes rapidly and the temperature differences between day and night are large. Sometimes it rain and after a few hours it becomes super hot and stuffy. Thus, many people suffer allergic symptoms such as allergic sinusitis, allergic rhinitis, eczema, hives, hay fever and asthma, etc.

People may start to sneeze in the morning with a runny nose, nose block, sore throat or the skin start to feel itchy and irritating. The worst thing is both of these symptoms can happen together!

On the other hand, people also easily catch the flu or get influenza as it is windy. The wind evil can invade our body and cause all the discomforts. People may got caught in the rain and given the opportunity for evil pathogens to invade the body.

The evil pathogenic wind will affect the function of the lungs at first because lungs are the first protection of the body 's immune system. Lungs also known as canopy and categorized as upper jiao (biologically located at upper part of the body). When lungs attacked by wind-cold, it will show symptoms related to the nose, skin and upper part of the body such as: cough profusely with white phlegm, running nose, nose block, sneezing with profuse white nasal discharge, headaches, skin rashes, itchy throat, sore throat, etc.

The aim of herbs is to expel the wind-cold, warming the meridian and tendons, strengthen the lung qi and defensive qi of the body. For the wind-cold in the early stage, body gua sha and fire cupping can be applied in the treatments. If the wind-cold is very strong, moxibustion and body acupuncture can combine in the treatments.

Wear warmer coat to cover the neck and shoulder. Drink warm water, soup or ginger tea. Avoid too much cold and raw food. Remember to get hot shower and dry yourself straight after caught in the rain.💕

Zulinqi 足临泣 (GB 41) is acupuncture point located at the junction of the 4th and 5th metatarsals. Draw up between the fourth and fifth toes, cross over the tendon, and drop into the hollow between these bones where they meet. It belongs to Gallbladder Meridian of Foot Shaoyang which is able to help in spreading liver Qi, benefits the eyes, chest, lateral costal region, and breasts, clears the head, transforms phlegm, dissipates nodules, etc.

Gallbladder Meridian is a complex pathway that begins at the outer corner of the eye and traverses the head, neck , shoulders, ribcage, hip, side of the leg and foot. As the exit point of this meridian, Zulinqi helps to drain congested Qi from the upper reaches of the channel, especially from the head. Hence it can treat headaches, particularly at the back and top of the head, visual distortion, dizziness and tinnitus. Sometimes, it combined with Fengchi 风池, Temple and Waiguan 外关 point to treat migraine. Locally, it treats pain and swelling on the top of the foot, and helps to heal the most common of foot fractures at the fifth metatarsal.

Besides, Zulinqi treats Gallbladder timidity where a person is fearful of taking action, and relieves depression. It helps to settle the person who is continually angry, frustrated and resentful. To reduce depression or anxiety, you may try to use the thumbs of both hands to press Zulinqi point vertically, then slowly flex and extend your toes to fully reach the deep layer of muscle tissue, gradually relax it after 20-30 seconds, rub the local part gently, repeat it for 5-10 minutes each time, two or three times daily.

When you have shaking hands, body and head, feel wobbly when you are walking for no reason, the first thought in your mind is i maybe have Parkinson’s Disease. However, these could be the signs of Essential Tremor (ET).

Essential Tremor (ET) is also known as “kinetic tremor” or “benign essential tremor”; it is a chronic nervous system disorder and often misdiagnosed as Parkinson’s Disease. In fact, it is much more common than Parkinson’s Disease. The main differences between these two is Essential Tremor (ET) usually occur when you are actively trying to do something, whereas Parkinson’s Tremor mostly occurs even when your limb are at rest.

From the view of Chinese Medicine, “Wind” is the main pathogenic factor that causes the tremors. There are two type of disharmonies related to “Wind”. The first “wind” is caused by external climatic factors such as diet, environment, emotions etc and therefore known as “External Wind”. It can categerioes into two stages which are “Wind-cold” and “Wind-heat” and manifests with common cold or flu-like symptoms such as running nose, itchy throat etc.

Common caused of “Internal Wind” is Kidney and Liver Yin Deficiency. Yang in nature represents activity thus represents function in human physiology, whereas Yin in nature represents stillness thus represents the material aspect of the human body including blood and body fluids. When Kidney Yin is deficient and cannot nourish the LIver leading to deficient Liver Yin then causing the “Heat in the Liver”. As the Liver Heat accumulating and become very intese and moving, it will transform into what we know, the “Internal Wind”.

Chinese Herbs that have the actions of “Extinguishing Wind and Soothing the Liver” such as Abalone Shell(Shi Jue Ming 石决明), Gambir Plant(Gou Teng 钩藤), Stiff Silkworm(Bai Jiang Can 白僵蚕), Tall Gastrodian Tuber( Tian Ma 天麻), Red Ochre(Dai Zhe Shi 代赭石) are used in treatment of tremors.

Many clinical studies had done and supported that Acupuncture and Chinese herbs help in reducing the tremors.

Ramadan Kareem to our Muslim friends! 🌙✨

Here are some self-care tips to avoid feeling tired and having stomach upsets during fasting month:

- Don’t skip sahoor! Your body needs enough Qi and nutrients throughout the day, having a nutritious meal during sahoor will help a lot.
- Keep hydrated. Remember to drink enough water after breaking fast and try to get 8 glasses of water per day. Limit caffeine and drink cold drinks moderately. Too much cold drinks may hurt the stomach and causes gastritis or stomach upsets.

- Eat mindfully. Make sure to eat slowly and try to not overeat when you break your fast. Limit sugary food and drinks, less oily and too spicy foods.

- If you overeat or having an indigestion, our herbal formula Bao He Wan is a good savior to remove food stagnation and harmonise the stomach.

- Ginger tea helps with digestion too! You may have one after iftar if you are not the heaty type. If you easily feel heaty, limit the ginger or take it during sahoor instead.

- Chinese Medicine treatments are permissible during fasting! Of course, our physician will check your overall body condition to know which treatment suits you best. We provide acupuncture, guasha, wet cupping (bekam darah) and fire cupping (bekam angin).

- If you are suffering from gastritis, acid reflux or having belching and bloating, feel free to reach out to us. We can provide both physical and online consultation ☺️
