We recently engaged with dialysis nurses in Ipoh to focus on practical skills that directly support better care for dialysis patients.

Led by Dr Tan Kia Lean, our Consultant Vascular & Endovascular Surgeon, the session covered the early detection and management of peripheral artery disease (PAD), as well as recognising and addressing vascular access issues.

The programme also included a hands-on workshop, where participants got to practise ultrasound-guided cannulation and observe demonstrations of endovascular procedures and Ankle-Brachial Index (ABI) testing, making the learning more practical and relevant to their daily work.

As our first vascular workshop of the year, this reflects the continuous efforts by Dr Tan Kia Lean and our vascular team in supporting ongoing education and strengthening clinical capabilities.

We would like to thank all participants for their active involvement, as well as our partners, Boston Scientific, AiM Medical Supplies, Infinity Medical, and H&A Medical Supply for their support in making this programme possible.

We don’t always feel it when something’s wrong, especially when it comes to the heart.

Risk builds quietly over time and changes with your age, lifestyle, and family history. That’s why screening isn’t one size fits all. What matters is knowing what’s right for you and when to start.

This guide by Dr Suren Thuraisingham, Consultant Cardiologist, shares who should get screened and why it matters.

𝗙𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗵𝗲𝗮𝗿𝘁𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿𝘀, 𝗦𝗮𝗹𝗮𝗺 𝗔𝗶𝗱𝗶𝗹𝗳𝗶𝘁𝗿𝗶

A simple salam can say so much without words. It brings us back to the people who matter, the ones who make everything feel a little lighter just by being around.

In between the celebrations, we at CVSKL hope you find time to slow down. To forgive, to appreciate, and to just be present with your loved ones. Because sometimes, taking care of your heart is as simple as being with the people who matter.

At the end of the day, it’s never really about the big things. It’s the small moments that stay, the conversations, the laughter, the quiet understanding.

We at CVSKL wish you a Hari Raya filled with warmth, good company, and moments that truly matter.

When the doctors explained everything to me, the condition, the risks, and the options, I knew there was only one way forward. I said, ‘Let’s go ahead with it.’

For patients with aortic stenosis, the valve becomes narrowed, restricting blood flow from the heart. While medications may help ease symptoms, they cannot fix the underlying issue.
In the past, open heart surgery was the only option. Today, Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implantation (TAVI) offers a minimally invasive option that allows doctors to replace the valve through a blood vessel without opening the chest.

Before the procedure, patients undergo a series of tests including blood tests, an echocardiogram, and a CT angiogram. Each case is carefully reviewed by a multidisciplinary heart team to determine the most suitable treatment approach.

As Datuk Dr Rosli Mohd Ali explains,
“If TAVI is suitable for the patient, the success rate can be more than 95%, with a very low risk of complications.”

Behind every successful procedure is a dedicated TAVI team, led by our Consultant Cardiologists, Dato’ Dr Tamil Selvan Muthusamy, Dr Choo Gim Hooi, and Datuk Dr Rosli Mohd Ali, guiding patients through every step of the journey.

Stay tuned for Episode 3 as we continue following the next chapter of their TAVI journey.

We understand that facing a possible surgery or medical procedure can feel overwhelming, and having the right information and reassurance can make all the difference.

Dr Tan Kong Hean, our Consultant Vascular & Endovascular Surgeon, takes this approach in every consultation, ensuring patients understand their condition and the treatment options available to them. With expertise in both open vascular surgery and minimally invasive endovascular procedures, he focuses on recommending treatments that are appropriate and tailored to each patient’s needs. Sometimes, that also means advising against procedures when they are not medically necessary.

We are grateful to receive feedback like this from our patients. It encourages us to continue delivering the best care, hospitality, and treatment experience for our patients.

We often hear about blood clots, but did you know that Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT) is a type of blood clot that forms in a deep vein, usually in the leg? Each year, around 10 million people worldwide develop blood clots, including DVT.

Common symptoms to watch out for include leg swelling, calf pain, warmth, or redness in the affected area. In some cases, DVT can develop without obvious warning signs, making early awareness and checks important.

If you notice these symptoms or would like to assess your risk, speak to our Consultant Vascular & Endovascular Surgeons: Dr Tan Kia Lean, Dr Leong Yew Pung, and Dr Tan Kong Hean.

Earlier this month, we partnered with Hong Leong Bank to host a health screening and educational session focused on promoting greater awareness of cardiovascular health and preventive care.

The programme featured a sharing session by Dr Lee Li Ching, our Consultant Cardiologist, who spoke on “Greater Understanding on High Cholesterol.” During the session, Dr Lee shared practical guidance on managing cholesterol through lifestyle choices such as balanced nutrition, physical activity, and appropriate medical care when necessary, helping participants better understand how small steps can make a meaningful difference to long-term heart health.

Participants also had the opportunity to undergo on-site health checks, including glucose, cholesterol, and ECG screenings, alongside personalised consultations that helped them better understand their health indicators and potential risk factors.

We would like to thank Hong Leong Bank for the collaboration and all participants for their active engagement throughout the session. Initiatives like these create valuable opportunities for knowledge sharing, encourage early health screening, and help individuals take more proactive steps towards protecting their long-term health.

At first, it didn’t seem like a big deal. Just a few days of feeling breathless. But sometimes even small symptoms can be the heart’s way of signalling that something isn’t quite right.

“A TAVI Journey” is a series highlighting real patient experiences with Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implantation (TAVI).

In this first episode, we follow patients diagnosed with aortic stenosis, a narrowing of the aortic valve that limits blood flow from the heart. As they navigate their diagnosis, they learn more about TAVI, a minimally invasive procedure used to treat this condition.

Guiding them through the journey are our Consultant Cardiologists, Dato’ Dr Tamil Selvan Muthusamy, Dr Choo Gim Hooi, and Datuk Dr Rosli Mohd Ali, who share their insights on the condition and the treatment options available today.

Every heart has a story.
These are some of them.

Stay tuned to Episode 2, where we follow the next stage of their TAVI journey.

Hari Raya is almost here, and we’re rolling into the season with a sneak peek from CVSKL’s upcoming e-Cookbook— Pumpkin Chia Onde-Onde & Multigrain Nasi Impit with Sayur Lodeh.

This reimagined version of the classic onde-onde blends pumpkin and chia seeds for added fibre, while the multigrain nasi impit - made with barley and brown rice - is finished with sesame seeds for a heartier bite. Paired with a lighter sayur lodeh filled with vegetables and soy-based proteins, it is a comforting festive dish with a more balanced twist.

More recipes will be shared in our upcoming e-Cookbook. Stay tuned as we look forward to a more mindful celebration this Hari Raya

11/03/2026

Your heart has four valves that help keep blood flowing smoothly through the body. With every heartbeat, these valves open and close to ensure blood moves in the right direction.

When one of these valves becomes narrowed or stiff, it can restrict the flow of blood leaving the heart. This condition is known as aortic stenosis, where the aortic valve does not open fully and the heart has to work harder to pump blood to the rest of the body. Over time, this extra strain can lead to symptoms such as shortness of breath, chest discomfort, or fatigue.

For suitable patients, doctors may recommend Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implantation (TAVI) as a treatment option. This minimally invasive procedure replaces the damaged valve and helps restore normal blood flow through the heart.
