Eczema is a condition where patches of skin become inflamed, itchy, cracked, and rough.

𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗰𝗮𝘂𝘀𝗲𝘀 𝗲𝗰𝘇𝗲𝗺𝗮?
The exact cause for eczema is unknown, but scientists know that it is due to abnormal immune response. Other factors include genetic and triggers like dust and certain food.

𝗪𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝗶𝘁 𝗦𝗽𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗱 𝘁𝗼 𝗢𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿𝘀?
Eczema is NOT contagious.

𝗗𝗼 𝗬𝗼𝘂 𝗞𝗻𝗼𝘄?
The prevalence of eczema has increased significantly over the past 20 years. It affects around 1 in 10 people around us!

𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝘁𝗼 𝗺𝗮𝗻𝗮𝗴𝗲 𝗲𝗰𝘇𝗲𝗺𝗮?
There is currently no cure for eczema, however we can take these measures to prevent it from worsening:

1️⃣. Moisturise regularly: Keep skin hydrated regularly by applying moisturising cream or ointment.

2️⃣. Reduce itch and avoid scratching: Apply cooling aloe vera gel to ease itching.

3️⃣. Use gentle soap without harsh chemicals: Irritants such as conventional soaps, disinfectants, fragrances and other chemical reagents may worsen flares in atopic eczema.

4️⃣. Avoid triggers: Avoid house dust mites, cigarette smoke and certain food which may cause allergies to flare up.

5️⃣. Antioxidants: Vitamin C, selenium, curcumin and OPC-3 can prevent free radical damage to our skin.

Painful period cramps can range from a dull, nagging sensation in the lower abdomen for 1-2 days, to severe belly and lower back pain, sometimes even with nausea and vomiting!

The cramps sometimes can be intense enough to keep you from work, disrupt social plans, and daily activities!

Besides hot water bags and pain killers, here are some natural remedies to help ease the pain:

The 2010 National Health Survey found that 40 percent of Singaporeans were deficient in vitamin D, while another 8 per cent were very deficient. For people with low sun exposure, suggest to consume vitamin D supplements daily to help reduce menstrual cramps.

Magnesium is helpful for muscle cramps and period cramps. One study showed that taking magnesium supplement a week before the period, for 2-5 months, helps to reduce the severity of period cramps. Adults need to consume 320-450mg per day.

Omega 3 fatty acids from fish oil blocks the inflammatory chemicals called prostaglandins, which cause the cramping pain during menstruation. Choose an omega 3 with a higher strength at 1500mg with EPA and DHA. Always pick an omega 3 fish oil that comes small fish, like anchovies, so that the risk of contamination is minimised.
