🌻23rd October🌻

We had the opportunity to visit the Pusat Pemulihan Dalam Komuniti (PDK), which means Community-Based Rehabilitation Centre (CBR) in English. 🇲🇾

PDK centres play such an inspiring role in supporting individuals with disabilities (OKU – Orang Kurang Upaya) by offering rehabilitation, education, and community integration services — all within their local communities. ❤️

Truly a heartwarming experience to see how love, care, and community come together to make a difference. 💕

👋 Hello everyone !! 😁😁
Perdana University School of Occupational Therapy(PUSCOT) has organised an event which is Occupational Therapy Day aka OT day that was held on 29th October 2022 at IQ70 plus (Petaling Jaya). We greatly appreciate that they willingly accepted us with big arms for us to conduct a community service event with the children from Praise Emmanuel Children Home (PECH). In addition, we are grateful that Mr Christopher allowed us to have his children from PECH to participate in our event. If you're interested to lend a helping hand through donations or services/programmes to these two homes, please feel free to contact them for further details.

As for PECH, there were a 👉 total of 5 children involved and 3 of them are likely to be slow learners. 👈

The video shows the highlights of the event on how we performed activities with OT skills/services as well as interventions.

For an upcoming event on 29th October 2022 which held at IQ 70 Plus PJ, we would like to introduce our committees that involve and briefly get to know them with their interest in being a part of the team and what took them to choose to be an Occupational therapist as their journey of the life.

Who will benefit?
Everyone who receives volunteered community service benefits by the generosity of the participating occupational therapy practitioners and students. This is also a unique opportunity to unite the global occupational therapy community and share experiences with occupational therapy practitioners and students around the world. (WFOT, 2022)

What do we know about OT?
1. "Occupational Therapy is critically underdeveloped in many developing countries in Asia. There are many internal and external barriers to the growth of the profession, including lack of willpower and lack of professional representation in the government." (Loh et al., 2021)

2. "Occupational Therapists collaborate directly with case-relevant health/social specialists or primary physicians/ surgeons." (Loh et al., 2021)

3. "in Asian countries, Occupational Therapy’s standing is critically low in the ratio of therapist: patients." (Loh et al., 2021)

4. "a low literacy of the OT profession by the education/medical/health sectors, low awareness among policy makers, lack of leadership representation within the profession, and absence of governmental will power to address the stagnation and professional (dys)-autonomy" (Loh et al., 2021)

Good afternoon to everyone!

We're planning to do community services as an act of celebration of our OT Day. The theme of the event:
World Occupational Therapy Day 2022:
“Opportunity + Choices = Justice”

Will visit Two Orphanage / Children’s Homes in Selangor and Kuala Lumpur. The event will be held on the 29th of October 2022 from 10 a.m. to 4.00 p.m.

The purpose of having these services:
1. To promote occupational therapy as well as create awareness among the public and leave a positive impact on these underprivileged children and children with special needs at large.
2. To raise social awareness among occupational therapists to provide their expertise by broadening their horizons to help them to understand the needs of society and the underprivileged children population that we are volunteering on.
3. To promote the services provided by Perdana University.

Thank you!

Before we get into the mainstream,

Here are the fun facts about the Occupational therapy.
We focus on ‘occupations’ which have multiple meanings. For children, their main occupation is playing along with dressing/grooming/feeding skills, writing, socializing, and many more.

Normally, paediatric occupational therapist always works (aka PLAY) with children who diagnosed a wide range in Autism, ADHD, sensory processing disorder, cerebral palsy, Down’s syndrome, traumatic brain injuries, premature infants, and many more.
(10 Fun Facts about Occupational Therapy, 2021)

Besides, in a school setting, an occupational therapist’s role is to support students
towards academic achievement and encourage positive behaviours that are necessary for learning. The main objective of school-based occupational therapy is to support the students to master academic skills in mathematics, reading and writing as well as nonacademic skills such as social interaction, behaviour management and participation in sports. Unfortunately, schools in Malaysia have not implemented school-based occupational therapy. (Zaid et al., 2021)

Let's don't feel discouraged yet, things will improve time by time, at least we can acknowledge it sooner. When there is a will, there is a way. ☺️
