When land is cut, harmony is broken: A Vasthu warning

By Dr. T. Selva

In the pursuit of owning property, many buyers focus on location, price, and aesthetic appeal. Yet, one critical aspect is often overlooked—the integrity of the land itself.
In the ancient science of Vasthu Sastra, a plot is not merely measured by its size or shape, but by its completeness.
A “cut” in a plot—whether a missing corner, an irregular extension, or a truncated boundary—is not just a physical defect.
It represents a disruption in the natural flow of subtle energies.
Each direction in a property acts as a channel through which specific energies enter and circulate.
When any portion is missing or distorted, the balance is disturbed, and this imbalance can subtly influence the lives of those who live or work within the space.
The ancients understood that every direction is governed by a divine intelligence, often referred to as the guardians of space.
These forces regulate the energies that sustain health, wealth, relationships, and overall well-being.
When a direction is cut, weakened, or improperly utilised, the qualities associated with its ruling force become compromised.

The Eight Directions and the Impact of Cuts and Defects

North – Lord Kubera (Wealth and Prosperity)
The North, ruled by Lord Kubera and influenced by Jupiter, governs wealth and the flow of finances.
When this direction is cut, blocked, or burdened by heavy structures, it obstructs the inflow of prosperity.
Occupants may face financial instability, mounting expenses, delayed payments, or difficulty saving despite consistent effort.
South – Lord Yama (Justice and Discipline)
The South, governed by Lord Yama and influenced by Mars, represents discipline and karmic balance.
A cut or defect in this zone can manifest as legal issues, disputes, conflicts, or fear-driven decisions.
It may also bring emotional stress, anxiety, and the surfacing of unresolved karmic patterns.
East – Lord Indra (Growth, Authority, and Vitality)
The East, ruled by Lord Indra and associated with Venus, signifies growth, opportunities, and vitality.
When this direction is missing or weakened, it can lead to career stagnation, lack of recognition, poor health, and diminished motivation.
Younger members of the household may particularly struggle with confidence and academic progress.
West – Lord Varuna (Stability and Fulfilment)
The West, governed by Lord Varuna and influenced by Saturn, represents emotional balance and fulfilment.
A cut in this direction may result in unstable gains, dissatisfaction, strained relationships, or addictive tendencies.
Even when success is achieved, it may not bring lasting contentment.
Northeast – Lord Ishana (Divinity and Higher Consciousness)
The Northeast is the most sacred direction, ruled by Lord Ishana and associated with Mercury.
Any cut or defect here is considered highly inauspicious. It can disrupt the property’s spiritual core, leading to confusion, poor judgment, recurring obstacles, health concerns, and a sense of being stuck despite sincere effort.
Southeast – Lord Agni (Fire and Transformation)
The Southeast, governed by Lord Agni and linked to the Moon, represents energy and transformation.
When cut or imbalanced, it may give rise to anger, frequent arguments, financial fluctuations, digestive issues, and emotional instability.
Northwest – Lord Vayu (Movement and Change)
The Northwest, ruled by Lord Vayu and influenced by Ketu, governs movement and relationships.
A defect or missing portion here may cause restlessness, instability in relationships, anxiety, and difficulty settling in career or personal life.
Commitments may feel uncertain and short-lived.
Southwest – Lord Niruthi (Stability and Endings)
The Southwest, governed by Lord Niruthi and associated with Rahu, is the anchor of stability and strength.
A cut in this direction is particularly serious. It may lead to loss of authority, financial drain, health issues, emotional distress, and recurring setbacks.
The head of the household may be especially affected, and the home may lack a sense of grounding.

Conclusion
In Vasthu Sastra, every direction is an energetic gateway governed by a higher intelligence. When the land is whole and balanced, these forces work harmoniously to support and uplift the occupants.
However, when a plot is cut or incomplete, the natural flow of energy is disrupted, and this disharmony can manifest as challenges in various aspects of life.
Therefore, one must exercise caution when purchasing or residing in properties with missing corners or irregularly cut corners.
For those who have already purchased or are staying in such a defective plot, the fault can be remedied through the Vasthu Yantra ceremony.
Details of the yantra will be revealed in the upcoming columns.

Is it auspicious to have a cat in your home?
There is a long-standing belief that while dogs are considered auspicious, cats are not. But how should we understand this in today’s context?
Cats have even been associated with mystery, unpredictability and negativity, which over time translated into the idea that they may not be energetically favourable within a home. - Dr. T. Selva

Ushering in the Tamil New Year tomorrow

By Dr. T. Selva

The arrival of the Tamil New Year on April 14 (Tuesday) marks more than just the turning of a calendar; it signifies renewal, hope, and the alignment of human life with cosmic rhythms. Known as Puthandu, this sacred day is deeply rooted in tradition, symbolising the dawn of fresh opportunities and the chance to reset our lives with clarity and purpose.
In the realm of Vasthu Sastra, the ancient Indian science of architecture and energy balance, the New Year is an especially powerful time.
It is believed that the energies present at the beginning of the year set the tone for the months ahead.
By consciously aligning our living spaces and personal actions with positive vibrations on this day, we invite prosperity, harmony, and well-being into our lives.
Just as nature renews itself, Vasthu encourages us to cleanse, organise, and energise our surroundings—ensuring that our homes become channels for abundance rather than obstacles to it.
Welcoming the New Year with awareness and intention transforms it into a sacred ritual rather than a mere celebration.

Ten Vasthu-Inspired Tips to Welcome the Tamil New Year
1. Begin with a Cleanse
Declutter and thoroughly clean your home, especially the entrance, and clear the corners. Dispose of all broken and unused items, as they do not generate goodness. A clean space allows fresh, positive energy (prana) to flow freely.
2. Energise the Main Entrance
Decorate your doorway with fresh mango leaves (thoranam) and kolam designs. The entrance is the “mouth” of energy—keep it vibrant and inviting.
3. Light Up the Northeast
The northeast direction is considered the zone of divine energy. Keep this space free from weight and light a lamp or diya here in the early morning to invoke blessings.
4. Perform Early Morning Prayers
Start the day by waking up early and facing east during prayers. This aligns you with the rising sun—symbol of new beginnings and vitality.
5. Arrange the Puthandu Tray Mindfully
Include auspicious items in your offerings like fruits, flowers, gold, betel leaves, sweets and a mirror. Place it in the northeast or east direction to amplify positivity.
6. Open Windows and Doors for Fresh Energy
Let sunlight and fresh air circulate throughout the house. Natural elements cleanse stagnant energy.
7. Wear Bright and Auspicious Colours
Opt for colours like yellow, gold, maroon, orange, or white, which represent prosperity, growth, and purity. Avoid wearing black, grey and blue colours which are inauspicious.
8. Avoid Negative Speech and Thoughts
Vasthu is not just about space, it is also about energy within. Begin the year with kind words, the sweetness of speech, and a calm mind.
9. Cook and Share a Traditional Feast
Preparing festive dishes like Ponggal (sweet rice), Tamarind Rice (Pulihora) symbolises accepting all flavours of life—sweet, sour, bitter—with balance.
10. Set Intentions for the Year Ahead
Sit quietly and visualise your goals. In Vasthu, intention combined with aligned space creates powerful manifestation.

Tamil New Year is a sacred reminder that every ending carries the seed of a new beginning. When celebrated in accordance with the principles of Vasthu Sastra, it becomes an opportunity not only to rejoice but also to realign our lives with the universal flow of energy.
By honouring both tradition and spatial harmony, we don’t just welcome a new year, we invite a new destiny filled with balance, prosperity, and inner peace.

Vasthu does not operate on symbolism alone. It is fundamentally about energy flow and elemental balance.
A Kubera statue, or wealth Buddha, may uplift the mind, but it cannot override structural imbalances in a space. Then no amount of symbolic placement will produce lasting results.
This is where many go wrong: they rely on objects rather than orientation. - Dr. T. Selva

The Main Door, the Gateway of Energy

By Dr. T. Selva

In Vasthu Sastra, the main entrance of a home is regarded as the primary gateway through which energy flows into the living space.
Just as the human body receives nourishment through the mouth, the home receives subtle energies through its main door.
When the entrance is clean, welcoming, and properly aligned, it invites prosperity, peace, and positive opportunities into the household.
When neglected or cluttered, it may block the smooth flow of beneficial energy.
Here are 10 Vasthu Tips for the Main Door
1. Keep the entrance clean and well-maintained
The main door is the mouth of energy into the home. A clean, clutter-free, and well-kept entrance invites positive vibrations while repelling negativity.
Regular sweeping, washing, and even adding a pleasant fragrance can uplift the energy at the threshold.
2. Ensure the door opens smoothly inward
A main door that opens inward, preferably to the right, symbolises the smooth entry of opportunities, prosperity, and harmony. The door should open fully without obstruction and must be the largest door in the house to signify importance and authority.
3. Avoid clutter near the entrance
Shoes, unused items, bins, or broken objects near the doorway can block the natural flow of energy. This stagnation may reflect as delays, confusion, or missed opportunities in life. Keep the space open and organised.
4. Provide good lighting at the entrance
A well-lit entrance dispels darkness and negativity. Soft, warm lighting creates a welcoming aura, especially during evenings, and symbolically invites positive forces into the home.
5. Use a strong and sturdy main door
The main door represents protection and stability. A solid wooden door is highly recommended, as it radiates warmth and balance. Avoid overusing metal doors, as they can create a harsh, unwelcoming vibration.
6. Avoid placing a mirror directly facing the main door
Mirrors reflect energy. When placed directly opposite the main door, they may push away incoming positive energy. If used, position mirrors so they reflect towards the north or east, enhancing beneficial vibrations.
7. Keep the doorway free from obstructions
Avoid having large pillars, sharp edges, or broken structures directly facing the entrance. Such elements create energetic disturbances, often leading to stress or obstacles in daily life.
8. Decorate with auspicious symbols
Sacred symbols such as the sw****ka, Om, or other traditional emblems can enhance spiritual protection and attract prosperity. These symbols act as subtle energy enhancers.
9. Ensure the door does not make creaking sounds
A noisy door signifies energetic imbalance. Regularly oiling hinges ensures smooth movement, symbolising ease and harmony in life’s journey.
10. Create a welcoming entrance
Adding fresh plants, rangoli, or a neat maroon doormat creates warmth and positivity. A pleasant entrance not only impresses visitors but also continuously attracts harmony, peace, and abundance into the home.

Choosing an auspicious land to build your home

By Dr. T. Selva

In Vasthu Sastra, the land on which a home is built plays a vital role in shaping the well-being of those who live there.
Just as a strong foundation supports a building, the energy of the land supports the lives, prosperity, and harmony of the occupants.
Ancient Vasthu texts emphasise that selecting the right plot of land is the first and most important step before construction begins.
Land that carries positive natural energy can nurture health, success, and peace of mind.
On the other hand, land with unfavourable conditions may bring unnecessary obstacles and disturbances.
Before purchasing or building on a plot, it is wise to observe certain Vasthu principles.

Here are 10 Vasthu Tips for Choosing Auspicious Land
1. Prefer regular-shaped plots
Square or rectangular plots are considered the most balanced in energy flow and auspicious.
2. Avoid irregular or triangular plots
Any plot with unusual or distorted shapes may disturb the natural flow of energy. Such lands are those that are circular or semi-circular or have missing portions on the land.
3. Land should slope gently towards the north or east
This direction allows positive energy and prosperity to flow into the property. If the north or east is raised, it blocks the flow of subtle energy.
4. Avoid plots lower in the south or southwest
Such land may weaken stability and financial strength. If the south and southwest are lower, the energy that should be stored on the land escapes.
5. Observe the surrounding environment
Peaceful surroundings, greenery, and clean roads indicate positive vibrations. Do not stay close to places of worship like temples, mosques and churches as they are viewed as high energy areas,
6. Avoid land near cemeteries, dumping grounds, or polluted areas
Such locations may carry negative vibrations and unhealthy environments. They can invite unwelcomed energies that can harm your health, peace of mind and happiness.
7. Check the soil quality
Good, fertile soil with a pleasant smell indicates healthy land energy. The most recommended soil for building in Vasthu is fertile, soft, and that is light brown, yellowish, or orange in colour, as it is believed to support prosperity, health, and harmonious living.
8. Avoid land with a troubled history
Plots associated with violence, disputes, or suffering should ideally be avoided. Land that was used as a hospital, old prison or detention centre, battle grounds, violent events, and old burial or cremation ground is very inauspicious.
9. Ensure good road access
A plot with a proper approach road allows for the smooth flow of energy and opportunities.
The road leading to the property should ideally be wide, clean, and unobstructed.
10. Perform a Vasthu Yantra Puja and Bhoomi Puja before construction
Offering prayers to the earth and protecting the ground before building helps harmonise the land’s energies.
Choosing the right land is the first step towards building a home filled with harmony, prosperity, and positive energy.
