Empowering Schools with Life-Saving Skills 🫀⛑️

Institut Jantung Negara (IJN) reaffirmed its commitment to building a heart-safe community by training 40 teachers from 40 schools across Perlis in CPR (BLS) and AED usage yesterday, under IJN’s Catch ’Em Young Programme, in collaboration with the Perlis State Education Department.

Led by four certified IJN CPR instructors, the hands-on training covered adult CPR, AED application, baby and infant CPR, as well as choking management—equipping educators with practical emergency response skills that can make a critical difference when every second counts.

As shared by our GCEO, Prof. Dato’ Sri Dr. Mohamed Ezani Md Taib, teachers are often among the first responders in schools. By equipping them with CPR and AED knowledge, we strengthen the chain of survival and increase the chances of saving lives—especially in critical situations involving children.

Together, we are nurturing a culture of preparedness and saving lives—starting in our schools. 💙

In July 2024, IJN launched Asia’s first upgraded Cardiac Rehabilitation Centre, marking a new milestone in heart recovery care.

Equipped with advanced pneumatic exercise technology from Germany, Finland and the Netherlands, the centre replaces traditional weights with air pressure to create smoother, safer and more controlled workouts.

With systems such as HUR SmartTouch and Lode Cardiac Rehab Manager, each session is customised, guided, and monitored in real time through data like ECG and heart rate, allowing patients to train with confidence and precision.

Beyond the equipment, the programme offers a holistic recovery approach by combining personalised exercise, nutritional guidance and education on heart-healthy lifestyle habits.

This morning’s Leadership Talk Series was a meaningful and insightful session.

We were honoured to host Yang Mulia Raja Datin Paduka Teh Maimunah Raja Abdul Aziz, CEO of AEON Bank (M) Berhad, who shared key perspectives on leading in a digitally driven environment while staying grounded in purpose, people and values.

A key takeaway: digital leadership must be balanced with strong human judgment and responsible decision-making. Technology may accelerate outcomes but leadership still requires clarity, integrity and the ability to align teams.

In healthcare, this is highly relevant as we advance digital health, AI and data-driven care. Clinical excellence and digital innovation must move in sync to strengthen trust, support teams and enhance patient care.

Thank you to our speaker and to everyone who attended this morning.

There are 6 words hidden in this puzzle, each being a risk factor associated with silent heart attacks. Take a closer look and see if you can spot all of them. 🔍

Silent heart attacks can occur without clear warning signs, which is why understanding heart risk matters even when you feel well.

Heart risk is influenced by multiple factors, including age, family history of heart disease, high blood pressure, lack of physical activity and a previous heart attack.

Knowing your personal risk is an important first step. Regular heart health screening can help detect potential issues early, even before symptoms appear.

07/01/2026

ECMO, short for extracorporeal membrane oxygenation, is an advanced machine used to support patients whose heart or lungs are too weak to function properly.

The ECMO machine circulates blood outside the body, removes carbon dioxide and adds oxygen before sending it back into the bloodstream. It performs the essential work your heart and lungs would normally do, giving them time to recover.

This treatment is often used in severe cases of heart failure, lung injury or while waiting for a transplant.

At IJN, our critical care team combines advanced ECMO technology with a dedicated, experienced and compassionate expert team of professionals to care and help patients move towards recovery with hope and strength.

Our Story

Institut Jantung Negara (IJN), Malaysia’s premier heart specialist centre, is the perfect embodiment of a homegrown success story that is driven by committed, caring and concerned IJNers who are all on the same page in realising the Institute’s vision as a global centre of excellence in cardiovascular and thoracic care. Our roots can be traced back to 1992 when the Government took affirmative action to establish a dedicated Heart Institute, given the steep rise in heart-related cases among Malaysians of all ages - an important issue that was fast becoming a matter of national concern. It was the right decision made then, and to this day still is, as evidenced by the care and treatment provided by IJN to millions of the Institute’s patients.

Since 1992, IJN has kept pace in catering for the healthcare needs of a growing population with new and expanded facilities that complement the Institute’s existing facilities, complete with comprehensive amenities. Our farsightedness and customer-centric approach bear testament to our passion and dedication in ensuring that the community’s healthcare needs are met, not just for today but for decades to come.

We are well positioned to further grow and enhance its role as a centre of excellence in the field of cardiovascular and thoracic care

Since inception, IJN hit the ground running, and has not looked back since in pioneering several firsts in cardiovascular and thoracic healthcare and training programmes. These innovative breakthroughs have helped catapult us to the top in the field of cardiology as a Centre of Excellence, both in the ASEAN region and the world. Such international acclaim and stature are a testament of IJN’s unwavering commitment to providing world-class heart healthcare services to both Malaysian and international patients.
