The Malaysian Medical Association (MMA) warns that counterfeit and unregistered medicines are no longer a marginal issue, but a growing public health threat in Malaysia.
From 2023 to 2025, over 4,000 raids were conducted nationwide, with more than RM108 million worth of unregistered health products seized — highlighting the scale of the problem.
These fake products don’t just fail to treat illness — they can cause real harm. Some may contain unknown or contaminated substances, while others — including unregistered vaccines — may offer no protection at all, putting lives at risk.
MMA urges the public to stay vigilant:
• Buy medicines only from licensed pharmacies and registered healthcare facilities
• Always check for a valid MAL registration number
• Avoid unverified online sellers
At the same time, stronger enforcement and modern solutions — including advanced authentication and track-and-trace systems — are needed to combat increasingly sophisticated counterfeit operations.
