The Malaysian Medical Association (MMA) strongly supports the Malaysian Medical Council’s (MMC) decision to prohibit the issuance of medical certificates (MCs) through teleconsultations — an important step to uphold patient safety and professional accountability.

“We are seeing a worrying trend where clinical decisions are being influenced by non-medical administrators, insurers and digital platforms. Doctors must not be reduced to processors of scripted care,” said Datuk Dr Thirunavukarasu Rajoo, President of the Malaysian Medical Association (MMA).

He reminded all practitioners that the duty of care is personal and legally enforceable, regardless of employer or platform pressures. MMA also urged doctors to maintain independent judgment, proper documentation and to speak up when asked to act against professional ethics.

“Healthcare innovation is welcome, but it must never come at the cost of safety, accountability, or professional integrity. The foundation of our profession must always remain uncompromised.”

Malaysia is facing a national diabetes crisis, with one in five adults now living with the disease — the highest prevalence in Southeast Asia.

“This is deeply worrying. Diabetes is no longer just a health issue — it is a national crisis. We need bold, coordinated action involving the government, industry, educators and the public,” said Datuk Dr Thirunavukarasu Rajoo, President of the Malaysian Medical Association (MMA), in conjunction with World Diabetes Day.

He stressed the urgent need for early prevention, annual health screenings, stronger public health education, and healthier food environments, including a gradual reduction of added sugars in manufactured foods and beverages.

“Prevention is far more cost-effective than treatment. Health is everyone’s responsibility. Only through a united, whole-of-society effort can we reverse this alarming trend and protect future generations.” — 𝐃𝐚𝐭𝐮𝐤 𝐃𝐫 𝐓𝐡𝐢𝐫𝐮𝐧𝐚𝐯𝐮𝐤𝐚𝐫𝐚𝐬𝐮 𝐑𝐚𝐣𝐨𝐨, 𝘔𝘔𝘈 𝘗𝘳𝘦𝘴𝘪𝘥𝘦𝘯𝘵
