The Malaysian Medical Association (MMA) warns that counterfeit and unregistered medicines are no longer a marginal issue, but a growing public health threat in Malaysia.

From 2023 to 2025, over 4,000 raids were conducted nationwide, with more than RM108 million worth of unregistered health products seized — highlighting the scale of the problem.

These fake products don’t just fail to treat illness — they can cause real harm. Some may contain unknown or contaminated substances, while others — including unregistered vaccines — may offer no protection at all, putting lives at risk.

MMA urges the public to stay vigilant:
• Buy medicines only from licensed pharmacies and registered healthcare facilities
• Always check for a valid MAL registration number
• Avoid unverified online sellers

At the same time, stronger enforcement and modern solutions — including advanced authentication and track-and-trace systems — are needed to combat increasingly sophisticated counterfeit operations.

The Malaysian Medical Association (MMA) stresses that while employers may determine healthcare coverage, they must not interfere with doctors’ clinical judgment.

There must be a clear boundary between what is covered and what is prescribed — with treatment decisions guided by patients’ clinical needs, medical evidence, and established guidelines, not cost-control measures.

MMA reiterates its position:
The doctor prescribes, the patient decides, and the payor funds what it covers.

“When a doctor is directed to prescribe a less appropriate alternative purely on cost grounds, this moves beyond benefit management into clinical decision-making. That line should not be crossed.”
— 𝐃𝐚𝐭𝐮𝐤 𝐃𝐫 𝐓𝐡𝐢𝐫𝐮𝐧𝐚𝐯𝐮𝐤𝐚𝐫𝐚𝐬𝐮 𝐑𝐚𝐣𝐨𝐨, 𝐌𝐌𝐀 𝐏𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐢𝐝𝐞𝐧𝐭

MMA also calls on the Ministry of Health to issue clear guidance to ensure clinical independence is preserved and patient care remains the priority.

MMA says corporate benefit schemes cannot interfere with doctors' clinical decisions, stressing there's a clear boundary between what's covered by employers and what's prescribed by doctors based on clinical needs. MMA urges MOH to issue clear guidance.

The Malaysian Medical Association (MMA) warns that microplastics are no longer limited to food and water — they are now present in the air we breathe, making exposure increasingly unavoidable.

While long-term health effects are still being studied, MMA urges a precautionary approach, including stronger monitoring, research, and coordinated national action.

The Malaysian Medical Association (MMA) calls for an urgent revision of the RM100 monthly allowance for specialist nurses, unchanged for 17 years despite rising responsibilities and costs.

MMA warns that continued attrition of experienced nurses could further strain the healthcare system, with critical shortages already affecting specialised services.

“This is no longer just a matter of fairness — it is a matter of system integrity. The question now is whether national leadership will stand by them.”

It’s official—registration is now open for the 1st MMA Artificial Intelligence in Healthcare Conference.

Malaysia is at a pivotal moment in how AI will shape clinical care.

This conference brings together clinicians, policymakers, and industry leaders to focus on what matters most:
→ how AI is actually implemented in practice
→ how we build the right digital and data foundations
→ how we ensure it remains clinically led and patient-centred

For the next two weeks, early registrants can access a limited discount (first 50 participants), as we intentionally keep this an intimate, high-impact forum.
