Chronic Pain as a disease in its own right...End suffering now. Experts in medicine are agreed on one fact – Chronic pain is a disease in its own right , millions of people suffer from it but less than 2% end up seeing a pain specialist – simply because patients and health care companies believe there is no treatment and so quietly suffer. In 2009: World Health Organisation declared that they believe that Chronic Pain is a disease in its own right. In Europe in the last 5 years there has been a big push for recognition of pain as a disease in its own right and hence all the treatments i.e. physical therapy, medication optimisation , minimally invasive surgery should be offered and indeed supported as it is not acceptable for people to suffer significant pain in the 21st century. The first step is educating both public and allied health professionals. Knowledge is power. Many patients look for a cure or an exact cause for their chronic pain; this is as futile as looking for a cause for osteoarthritis, hypertension or diabetes. It is a disease of long term condition and impacts on lifestyle and function. Managing better pain relief, after appropriate assessment and investigations to rule out underlying sinister pathology, is a reality with newer drugs, short term targeted injections with local anaesthetic and steroids and neuromodulation (procedures to alter the perception and sensation of pain).

It’s been a long time since I posted but I feel it’s necessary in current climate
Insurance premiums are going up
Ministry are fighting it by regulating private hospital charges they want to create fixed charges for “ straightforward cases “
A gentle highlight as to current facts
Private health care is inflated that is true but if patients scrutinise their bill they will quickly realise that specialist doctors fees are 1. Fixed and regulated and have not increased with inflation 2. 90% of costs are from hospital charges
Private hospitals are not a charity they are for profit
Fixing and regulation of private hospital charges will lead to cherry picking ie on an individual basis the population is ageing hence they will be areas of complexity in patients , if private institutions follow clinical guidelines ( and these are becoming more defensive due to inflated medico legal settlements) clinicians have to be more careful and aware and practice defensively rather that be guided by solely clinical indications as they will be held accountable for not ruling out the outliers of maybe 0.1%
Hence it will lower the threshold for sending any possible foreseeable complications to the government sector
There are many on social media picturing the doctors as “greedy “, ordering unnecessary tests , lacking empathy and humanity

If one can step back and observe that providing medical care is still a profession it does not mean that due to its “morality of vocation “ clinicians should be admonished and berated for charging a professional fee.
The cost of inflation has raised food , transport , utilities and yes tight up to luxury goods
Does the medical profession need to be the sole bearer of “goodwill” and give free services and discount based on this and the lack of bear the brunt of being socially and morally castigated ?

I love’ my job but I’m so very disappointed by the way my profession is judged for eking out a living based purely on the cost of services provided that is morally judged

So first to all my fellow physicians
Cura te ipsum, heal thy self

UPDATE 18 Jul 2022: Recently, the Health Ministry had announced that they will be allowing the use of several medicine containing cannabidiol (CBD) next year. According to Khairy Jamaluddin, this decision was done after preliminary studies found that it might help patients with certain conditions. However, he had stressed that CBD products will only be available for medical purposes and obtained through prescription. Watch this space

Recently our Health Ministry announced that it would allow the cultivation of industrial h**p (a non-psychoactive strain of the cannabis plant) for the production of fibre and seeds solely for commercial purposes. While the date for said cultivation is yet to be announced, this move could be pretty....

When we bring in CBD, it won’t be available over the counter. It must only be prescription. Once we have the products here, the doctors should already know how to administer it. There’s no point for us to approve licenses to bring in CBD when doctors have no clue how to prescribe them. That’s what will take a bit of time. So next year as an estimate is realistic,” – Khairy Jamaluddin, translated from Utusan. Watch this space …
