Stroke is no longer just a disease of the elderly.
In Malaysia, 46% of stroke patients are in their prime working years. That means fathers, mothers, professionals, business owners and young executives are being affected at the peak of their careers.
This is not just a health issue. It is a family issue. An economic issue. A national issue.
When stroke affects someone under 60, the impact is often severe:
- Loss of income during peak earning years
- Long-term disability
- Reduced productivity for businesses
- Emotional and financial strain on families
The worrying trend is that many of these strokes are preventable.
High blood pressure, diabetes, high cholesterol, smoking and sedentary lifestyle are major risk factors. Early screening and timely treatment can significantly reduce your risk.
Recognising symptoms early is equally important. Sudden weakness on one side, facial drooping, slurred speech or severe headache should never be ignored. Immediate treatment can save brain tissue and improve recovery outcomes.
As a neurosurgeon, I see first-hand how stroke changes lives within minutes. But I also see how early intervention and proper rehabilitation can help patients regain independence.
